Dougie Lampkin – Repsol Montesa HRC delighted the home crowd in the United Kingdom today with a win in the British Round of the 2005 World Trials Championship at Hawkstone Park. In what was the first British Round to be held on the UK mainland for four years an impressive second lap from Lampkin secured him the win. Defending Champion Takahisa Fujinami Repsol Montesa HRC finished in second place with Albert Cabestany – Sherco taking the remaining podium position.
In what was a tough Trial reflected by the high scoring it was Fujinami who set the early pace. He ended the first lap on 27 penalties with Albert Cabestany in second on 32 and Lampkin back in third on 36. Despite his lead going into the second lap, Fujinami was unable to capitalise on it as Lampkin upped a gear, dropping just 14 for the lap. The three week break since the previous round in Italy has clearly benefited him and allowed the injuries he was still carrying from his accident on the first day of competition in France to fully recover.
Missing from the podium today was current Championship Leader, Adam Raga – Gas Gas. He was unable to find the form that has placed him at the top of the leaderboard and finished the day in fourth position. Raga still leads the Championship, but his lead was cut today with Fujinami his closest challenger, 13 points behind him and Cabestany a further 4 adrift of Fujinami.
In the Junior Championship it was to be James Dabill’s last ever appearance, and win, before he progresses on to the Adult Championship for the remaining rounds in Belgium and Germany. The surprise was Daniel Oliveras who, as winner of the 2005 Youth Championship is now competing in the Junior and who finished in second place.
The Youth Championship saw Matteo Grattarola – Sherco take top podium spot with Ross Danby – Gas Gas taking second place and Sam Haslam – Gas Gas taking the remaining podium position.
The championship now takes a break until the beginning of September when it returns with the two day Germany Round at Gefrees on the 3rd and 4th of September.
