Forgetting the disappointing 11th place finish in the Spanish Nationals TR2 class a few weeks ago, AMA National Champion Patrick Smage started his United States 2008 campaign by scoring a convincing victory over Will Ibsen (Gas Gas) and Cody Webb (Sherco) respectfully at the Sooner Cup on Steroids in Tishomingo, Oklahoma over the weekend. With a mere 1 dab on Saturday and 8 prods more on Sunday, Patrick accumulated 9 dabs for the weekend. In the process, Smage earned his biggest pay-day to date; A whooping $2,560 bucks.
Patrick Smage: "I am very happy with my riding this weekend. I did have a few mistakes - but overall I felt really good on the new Sherco 290. Saturday went really well for me. I had one point that was just a small mistake in a tight corner in section 6 where I lost my balance. I was very surprised to have cleaned all the sections, because after I walked them, I thought they looked very tough and expected to have a lot more points.
On Sunday I had a 5 and three single dabs. The five came at section 7 which had changed from Saturday and had a pretty big undercut splatter with very little run. The first lap I tried it from where everyone else was, but what I didn't know was that I was running out of gas and not lined up perfectly... so I didn't quite make it up. For the second and third lap, I decided to start with my front wheel in front of the small dirt kicker - and made it both times. The rest of the sections went pretty smoothly and I had a lot of fun riding them. Nothing beats riding big grippy rocks on a 290!
