Full Version: 2007 Sherco Gear Oil?

can ATF be used in the sherco 290 2007?

does it have to be a certain rating?

ive tried a couple of different oils, the lastest being PJ1 light gear oil but still tend to find the plates stick when the bikes been stood a few hours..

You may use ATF, I use the Merc synthetic currently. Makes a bit quicker clutch than the thicker oil. Personal pref here.

Neo reports excellent results using the "Nulon" motor oil, if you can search for that. Otherwise , best I can tell, the fresher it is, the less prone it is to sticking the plates due to the surface tension of the oil. rolleyes.gif

can i use any ATF?

Personally , I would not use just any ATF, if you just want the inexpensive stuff, go with the Dextron 3 or 4 or whatever it is now.

I would shy away from MTF designed for cars. Much of this is just too thick. Just as well to go with a good quality 10-40 motor oil best I can figure. The MTF designed for bikes is fine, as they mostly all deal with the wet clutch thing with no problem. rolleyes.gif

Yes, ATF for a car is ok(really do not know what other sort of ATF exhists), although being a thinner fluid, it will likely make the clutch a bit mor grabby/quicker, yet some may prefer that for quick pops and such.

For your average rider, I might not recommend the ATF, even though many Beta and Gasser riders use it, in a Sherco the 10-40 or regular motorcycle lite gear oil seems to give a smoother clutch apply.

I have experimented a bit over the years, but tend to stick with the synthetic high quality ATF or motor oils, not just run of mill junk for cheapness.. I must run the lighter atf in my current setup of light clutch(-2 springs) but it works and does not stick after sitting. Done the Dan Williams mods(Beta threads) and this helps too.
