  2. Caliper worn. Grooves where the steel plate of the brake pad rides on the aluminum caliper. Trials bike brakes usually lack the stainless steel protector found on Nissin and Brembo MX/enduro brakes.
  3. New piston seals. They compress/flex outward with braking pressure, then flex back inward and move the pistons back. If they are old / cooked from overheating, they won't . Source: "Brake Handbook" by Fred Puhn, Professional Engineer, HP Books, copyright 1985, 178 pages, mostly race car stuff.
  4. So, the bike had 13 / 52 gearing, which worked fine, and was so much easier to ride than my 4RT. To clarify, I was laughing because I was having fun, not because I regard myself as an expert with cat-like reflexes. I don't! I'm not! The bike is also fun on the open trail. It has a seat. It has mudguards which actually stop mud. Good power, and good gearbox ratios, nicely spaced for good acceleration, (unlike the modern 5 speeds with three low gears then a jump to fourth and a jump to fifth, not fun for trail riding.) If I'm not mistaken, Sammy Miller won the Scott Trial three years in a row on his Model 49, then Malcolm Rathmell won, but I'm not sure if that was a Model 49. So, the Model 49 ain't slow!
  5. Thanks, Woody. I rode the bike a few times with the ? / 52 gearing. It certainly felt slow in first to me, so much slower than my modern bike (Montesa-Honda 4RT 250,) I was laughing as I rode. Slow motion! When I count the front sprocket teeth I will report back.
  6. Thanks, Bully and Sherpa. My bike has 428 chain (Renold! but worn out.) I counted 52 on the steel rear sprocket, have not counted the front yet, and of course, I don't know if the gearing was changed before I got the bike.
  7. Hello, What is the standard original sprocket gearing for the 1970 Model 49 (Sherpa T?) And, are 520 sprockets/chain recommended? Thanks!
  8. Do you know if the other European manufacturers charge the 20% EU VAT?
  9. Hello Masso, the video I referred to was a short video without helmet cam. What don't you like about the sound of the new clutch bike?
  10. Perhaps the fan motor is DC and the AC output of the mag needs to be rectified to DC. Seems Betas of that era had some sort of diode in the circuit for simple rectification, if that diode went bad the fan would do what you describe.
  11. I found a youtube video dated Sept. 6, the video is worth many thousands of words, my questions are now answered, thank you jrsunt.
  12. Hello jrsunt. Any more on the E-Pure? Other pros and cons versus the Mont 4RT? thanks! -and - is the E-Pure Race a good choice for rocky climbs and streams ( never mind the gnarly stuff! )
  13. Hello TL125 person in New Zealand! Petert from Surrey is correct about the spoke trick for the newer motors such as TLR200 etc, , but as I recall from being a TL125 guy in the 70's, the adjuster is fixed directly to the tensioner arm and is a solid 8mm screw that is adjusted with a straight slot screwdriver. Turning the screw counterclockwise tightens the cam chain, clockwise loosens. Honda service manual was vague on procedure. For years I just adjusted until the chain was quiet, but that was a tricky method, too easy to overtighten. Try this instead: adjust with motor not running. Remove points/cam end cover. Find TDC on compression stroke. Remove cam adjuster caps to make sure you are on the right revolution of cam. Remove flywheel access cap. Adjust cam chain so slack just goes away when you rotate the crank back and forth counterclockwise and clockwise to feel what's happening at the cam. You may have to remove the centrifugal advance and cam sprocket cover. Have fun, it's a Honda so don't worry.
