  1. I have read a few posts here about the 123/172/200 Cotas jumping out of gear and other mentions of a flawed design. I haven't seen any information as to why? Both my 123 and 172 jump out of 1st or 2nd gears, the 123 occasionally and the 172 worse. If it is a design issue, what is it? I have rebuilt both engines with all new bearings with no apparent wear or damage to the gears etc. They have new springs in the selector and the pawls look fine. I have tried both less tension and more tension on the detent with no change. It does seem like it needs oil in the selector pawls to work, if the bike has been sitting it won't select anything till it starts up. It seems to happen going from off power to on or vice versa. Even idling along in 1st gear it seems like the on/ off from the individual power pulses from the engine is enough to knock it out of gear. Other times it will jump out as you go from zero throttle to wide open at the bottom of an obstacle. Are they critical for oil viscosity perhaps? Is it some sort of torque reaction moving the selector dogs inside the box? If anyone has some experience with this I would love to hear it. Cheers 👍
  2. 19M is the model code for the Cota 172. 0252 is the serial number which corresponds to the order the bikes were built in. As mentioned yours would be the 252nd bike built. From what I understand the 172 was released in October 1974 and I don't know how to tell the exact date they were built. Yours is an early one. The serial number is important when ordering parts as Montesa updated their bikes from a certain serial number, not by year like most other bikes.
  3. I found Inmotion good to deal with. If you need to cast your net a bit wider these guys in Spain are great to deal with. https://www.motosdelabuelo.com/index_en.html . There is an Ebay seller in the USA, Cyclesavant, who is also good to deal with. They bought all of the stock from Rocky Mountain Montesa and Southwest Montesa and have a lot of good used parts as well as NOS. Some of the Ebay sellers want crazy prices for used parts which can be bought new for a fraction of the cost, so it pays to shop around. What is the story with the 172 and what do you plan to do with it?
  4. It is an early 172 probably 1975 considering the engine number. Others may have more knowledge, but I don't think there is a definitive way to find the year of most Montesa's. They did model runs which may have gone for a couple of years, unlike Japanese bikes. Does your bike run? I rebuilt a 172 recently and they are a great bike to ride. I didn't have any issues finding parts and the piston for these are cheap compared to other Montesa's and Bultaco's.

    Montesa 123

The original size tires for the 123 are still available. Google clasicaslegendarias or Motos del Abuelo. They both have the tires listed on their catalogues but you would have to enquire as to availability . I have bought parts from the latter and had no problem.
  6. Thanks for your replies. The only reason I mentioned rebuildable shocks was for reliability. As long as the spare parts are available they should be able to be kept going for ever. Anybody else have experience with these shocks?
  7. I recently bought a Montesa Cota 172 project which needs shocks. As it is doubtful I will ever use the bike for competition I don’t need anything too flash, but I don’t want rubbish either. Ideally I would like something that: 1) Works as well or better than the original shocks would have. 2) Something that will be good quality and last well. I had found a couple of choices and was hoping to get some feedback from somebody who has actually had experience with them. NJB Clubman trial £72 Betor €100 OZO (Inmotion) expert trials £82.50 Feked expert trials £88 Am I right in assuming that the shocks sold by both Inmotion and Feked are both rebadged Betors? The Betors come in both oil and gas versions for the same price according to their website. They don’t say whether either version is rebuildable? Feked state that their version is re-valved to suit trials. It appears from the photo that these may be rebuildable. Is this correct? The NJB are the cheapest and I assume they are not rebuildable? Which shocks would you pick and why? Is there another brand in this price range I should consider? Thanks in advance
