  1. Hi, bike is running quite good now and I have also replaced the left side cover gasket after several failed attempts to get a seal. It is now well sealed however there is an oil leak from the blank grommet that covers the clutch adjustment bolt in the same cover. (The one halfway up the face / just above the grease nipple) 1. Should this area even have sump oil accessing there? 2. How is this normally sealed? (I have a cap but it still leaked) Thanks Mal
  2. Yes I have been doing that. Problem solved, I got hold of a service manual which states 1.9L capacity. Thank you for your input.
  3. Hmmm, interesting Maxwell. Will have a look.
  4. Hi Still Trying, I must have done this a dozen times and I am still not confident - different results every time and so hard to see with amber oil on the dipstick You would think that somewhere there will be a specification... Thanks mate.
  5. Thanks guys, I will pull the carby first and break it down, soak, clean and replace. I have a fine filter in line and do not use ethanol added fuel - however I don't know what the previous owner used. I appreciate your comments.
  6. Hi all, Well after 50 kicks the TL250 came to life! Very happy as this was the first time since I have owned the bike. There is an issue that requires attention however. The bike was idling ok even went for a short run around the yard on three occasions. However maybe just 3 minutes after starting with the idling remaining smooth down low, when I twist the throttle, it hesitates and backfires. Eventually it will stop. Kind of had to keep "micro" twisting the throttle slightly to keep it running. Starting it up not long after exactly the same sequence took place. (Prior to starting the bike, I replaced the fuel which was old, emptied the carby bowl.) Could this still be a fuel / carby issue or could it be a failing coil or something? Thanks for your opinions. Mal
  7. Guys anyone know the engine oil capacity? (1976 TL250) Having fresh oil marke near impossible to read the dip stick!
  8. Thanks guys for your replies... I have seen a lot of parts available on Ebay, however the freight costs are huge (US$33 freight on fork seals), so I thought there must be a local alternative that you guys would be familiar with. The TL250 parts I am after are (but not limited to): Fork seals and duct caps Front guard and mounting frame Rear guard Rear muffler Side covers She ain't no Pebble Beach show bike, so aftermarket parts are fine as long as they are in period with the bikes age.
  9. Hi all, Does anyone know where you can purchase new or used TL 250 parts in Australia? Thanks Mal
  10. Thanks guys for your answers - they are a great help.
  11. Thank you so much Maxwell. Great detail and easy to understand. just a quick one...how do I check if my plug and cap are 5k. If it was on the bike, would you expect then to be ok. So Ai just worry about it if it does not run right? thanks again. Mal (82desmo)
  12. Hi all, I have just acquired a 1976 TL250 that is in need of a good tidy up. (I am yet to start it) Today I looked at the electrics and discover a complete mess. One wire had 4 joins in 200 mm and there was a lot of patching and redundant wiring that bit by bit I removed and the bike now has no lights at all - just a on / off switch on the handlebars. Following the old wiring the coil, kill switch and points were all joined together and ran to the stator. Seems too simple??? What I am left with is a VERY basic set up and I just want someone who knows the TL250 to confirm: 1. Where does the yellow wire coming out of the stator go to? 2. The coil, kill and points all join at the same point - does this matter? 3. Does my diagram look correct - will the bike run and stop when required. Thanks in advance!
  13. Hi all, I have just acquired a bike that needs some attention and have some very basic questions that hopefully another air cooled four stroke trials owner and respond to... What engine oil is best for my bike (viscosity and mineral / semi-syn / synthetic) 10/40W??.... What fork oil is best for my bike (viscosity) 10W?? Should I mix a valve protection additive with my unleaded fuel? Is 91 octane unleaded the best fuel to use? Thanks Mal
