Sounds lovely, admiring my handy work with bike purring in background and notice on the old head where barrel meets bottom case that I dowel pin stayed on old head. Looking through manual, it appears there should be three of them. So probably my only has two now.. Any one tell me what exactly they do? And if I can leave it for a while with no risk of damage?...

200 Conversion, Help/advice

I am just about to go ahead with upping capacity of my 175 majesty to 200cc (199 cc with a 250 + 0.75 piston) only thing I need sorting now is the process of bushing the piston to accept the smaller gudgeon pin from the 175, anyone done this or know just how to go about it, I have lathe and reamers etc so making a bush is no problem, just wondered how the bush is fixed in the piston, any comments help appreciated.

Newly-Purchased Txt Pro 125 2003 Starting / Running Issues

Good afternoon all.

As some of you may have seen from previous posts, I have recently bought the above bike. It was bought as a “non-runner” (at a matching price) on account of the fact that the vendor couldn’t get it started and running for more than a few seconds. Obviously this is the first problem I need to solve, and I’m looking for any hints / tips anyone may have....

Time and resource is limited as I live in Munich and the bike is currently in the UK, I want to get it running properly before bringing it over here and have around two days to do so....

The bike hasn’t really been used for a year, kicks over eventually and fires, then dies after a couple of seconds – It sounds like it’s bogging full of fuel, likewise, when you touch the throttle it dies instantly. It was running a couple of weeks ago but I only saw a video clip of it, rather than in person.

Here are the steps I’m looking to take, please feel free to help me by offering more.. (Fuel is already drained out)

Strip, clean and reassemble carb, replace any blocked jets as required. Check float level and condition.

Decoke centre silencer. What is the easiest way to do this without cutting a hole in the back? Is caustic soda ok on this, if so, what’s the ratio to mix? Alternatively, I’ve heard brake cleaner may also be an option?

Check reeds – I’m new to older 2T maintenance – What do I need to look for?

Stator – I’ve heard these can be an issue. What is the resistance rating and across which points?

Compression check – Again, ideal measurements would be helpful here...

Other than that, it needs a fork seal which I can handle...

Thanks in advance...

I can't seem to find a manual online for the upside down forks either. In the case of the right(?) leg with no spring, I have all the internals out, and the dust cover and retaining clip off, but the halves don't want to separate. With the left(?) leg with spring, I've got a bit less far.

I recently started looking into how I could improve performance from the Beta 300 4T I am riding. I got some great advice from Ron Lee in the US, but the big help was an old buddy, Billy T. He is of course known for his carb knowledge, and me having never dealt with a diaphram carb, was in need of guidance. His help was invaluable and just wanted to say thanks! His tips have transformed the characteristics of the motor. It really works well stock, but wow, it is amazing to see the real potential of it now!

2004 Sherco 290 Fan Not Coming On

Hi

I am having a bit of bother with the radiator fan not coming on, on my 2004 sherco 290.

I replaced the otter switch and still no joy, then removed the connectors from the switch and joined the two together, the fan then came on so this confirmed that the fan will actually work and that there is power coming from the flywheel

The bike has been taken out on long runs, 2+ hours and it still hasnt come on. The bike has plenty of power throughout the run but I did notice when climbing long steep hills that ther was some water coming out of the radiator overflow pipe, i thought this would probaly due to having too much coolant / expansion from being hot as it didnt seem to be boiling.

The only thing I can think of is that the waterpump isn't circulating coolant through the engine properly and that is why the otter switch has not making contact. But I would have thought if this was the case, the bike would have over heated???

Has anybody else had this problem?

NEOTT had one of their night Trials last Saturday. Great fun and good turnout. The venue is 15 acres with it's own dedicated lighting and sound systems. Lots of banks, ravines and many, many neat man-made obstacles to play on (some of those huge earth-mover tires weigh 10,000 lbs!). It's a non-points event so the rules are loose and you can ride up a class if you want (and touch a split if you don't knock it off etc.... Scores are kept but just for bragging rights. A great catered Mexican feast and lots of smiles and laughter.

Formula Brakes Fiasco - Fixed!

I am posting this here in the hopes that it prevents someone else from the same frustration I went through... .and also to help dispel the myth that the Formula brakes are crap because they`re not, necessarily. But they are certainly getting a bad rap.

Let me start by saying I`ve been optimistic about these brakes from the beginning - I always though the AJP stuff was in need of an update and in particular hated the plastic lever bushes and the reach adjustment. So along comes the formula stuff with a proper monoblock caliper (current state of the art for racing, prevents caliper flex by eliminating the need to `split` the caliper into halves) and an ingenious reach adjustment that does with one thumbwheel (no tools!!) that used to need two threaded adjusters, a 10mm whrench, and an allen key. Also gone are the plastic lever bushings, replaced by a stainless steel pivot pin. Engineering wise there is a lot to like about these components, not to mention they are a bit lighter than even the latest and greatest AJP kit on my 2011.

So the brakes are trick, but they didn`t work right!! First impressions were good but it soon became clear that something is rotten in the province of Bologna.....sort of a `notchy` feel to the brakes. I started by taking apart the Master cylinder and found it to be `graunchy`` so took it apart, cleaned it up, and it improved it immensly, and also I found the pivot pin was dry as a bone from the factory and lubed it a bit. This certainly improved things a bit and my first couple of hours on the bike were happy ones, but by the second time I rode the bike I found the brake to be getting worse - poor feel, short on power, too much lever travel, etc. this was a few days ago and today I finally had some time today to fiddle and made up my mind to fix it once and for all.

I literally spent all afternoon completely disassembling the front brake caliper, cleaning it all up (an ALARMING amount of aluminum filings), polishing the bores, reassembling, took apart the m/c and cleaned it for the second time, and basically got everything as close to perfect as I could…. Put it back on the bike, and same crappy brakes. Mushy, weak, but sort of grabby at the same time under low braking force, awful!!

What is particularly troublesome about this is there’s no reason that I can see that these brakes shouldn’t be wonderful, it’s not rocket science, just basic physics, and there is nothing “wrong” here, although I would say there was an unacceptable amount of crap/crud inside the calipers, I don’t recommend taking them apart, it is just too much work for no gain. After all that work I feel I basically wasted a number of hours I could have spent riding!!

So I’m staring at it watching the rotor move in and out probably a 1/16” while I apply the brake, puzzled by this, because it didn’t make sense then I realized the rotor was actually moving the other way at the other end of the pad…. And even to my eye it looked as though the caliper was flexing but this can’t possibly be it – there is no way you are going to flex a casting as stout as that caliper!!!

Turns out that the powder coating on the forks, where the caliper mounts, was sort of chipped/peeling off, but unevenly, and causing the caliper to mount slightly “off” by a few degrees – a few minutes with a file to clean up the mounting surface fixed this up, and instantly improved matters by 100%. I have yet to ride anywhere other than the backyard with them, but am almost sure the problem is 100% fixed. I went from barely being able to lock the front wheel, and basically being able to pull the lever all the way to the bar, to being able to do nice controlled rolling stoppies, and having a nice firm lever. These brakes are every bit as good, now, as the AJP’s on my 2011. I think – I will know for sure on Tuesday!

So to summarize, if you are not happy with the Formula ABS brakes, I would recommend the following steps:

- disassemble and clean the master cylinder.
- lube the lever pivots
- adjust the levers inwards - they are quite a bit shorter than standard AJP levers, you can`t have room for more than two fingers on these.
- make sure the caliper is straight to the rotor and the rotor is not deflecting as the brakes are applied (and conversely springing the pads out when you let off the brakes) - this used up a lot of lever travel on miine and the misalignment was affecting performance too.
(edit - I have also heard from a more than reputable source that switching to dot 5 silicone fluid helps clear things up too - but that does require a complete clean/flush of the system)

I`d love to hear any feedback on this - good luck and keep your feet up!!!

Some of you may or may not know this already, but for those of you that don't...rememebr to keep your steering head bearings fully greased.

A quick and eay way to do this without having to take the headstock apart is to simply remove the front number place and then remove the two bolts holding the EFI capacitor in place, replace the bottom bolt finger tight to block the hole, then place a grease nipple in the top hole, attach your grease gun and pump the head full of grease. You can check to see how full it is by removing the bottom bolt at first and waiting until the grease pumps out, then replace he bolt and pump some more in.

Very easy and certainly saves taking the steering apart.

Rider 231 led the field away today - Gary Pears from Richmond MC set off at 7.30am on his last run of the week, and did so in glorious sunshine. If it stays like this we'll have a cracking end to the trial - it's blue skies, sunshine, and it's almost mild!

The route goes down towards the West Highland Way, then into Kinlochleven before going out towards Loch Chiarain, down the back of Leanachan forest and then a loop round Glen Nevis before finishing in traditional style in the town centre. The key spectator points are going to be at Pipeline and Lower Mamore in the morning, then on to Ben Nevis and Nevis Forest in the afternoon.....the Ben is so often where the trial is won or lost, so it's a great spot to be in on a day like today where everything is sooooo close.

Click the map image at the foot of this article for full details of today's route and the sections involved. If you want to find out exactly where some of the most popular sections are, remember you can use our Find A Section service! Simply click the + sign beside the group you're interested in, then click the box in the middle of the four arrows on the map that appears to flag up the location of the groups. From there you can zoom in and navigate around the map as much as you want.

If you'd like to check on the progress of the trial throughout the day, we have GPS trackers being carried by our fore-runners (who run in front of the trial to make sure that all is well), six riders spaced throughout the day and our backmarkers (who run behind the trial picking up flags, markers and riders, where necessary!). Just click the big Spot logo at the foot of the page to see that....thanks to the makers of The UPY Liftbike for sponsoring this service and making it possible!

Unfortunately we don't have the webcam service today - the work starts to dismantle much of the West End Car Park this afternoon, and so the webcams have been removed already before they get caught up in the destruction. Now that all the bikes are out there isn't really much left to see anyway, so hopefully you won't mind!

Tonight the SSDT finishes with the Presentation Of Awards at 9pm in the Nevis Centre at An Aird. Every finisher will get their moment on the stage and pick up their hard-earned award, so come along and give them a cheer....after what they've been through, they deserve it!

Beta Rev 3 Is 'hitching' At Low Rev

Hi,

I'm not sure I can describe this symptom and I hope 'to hitch/hitching' is the right word that describe my problem.
Let's say I ride the bike in the 3rd gear and I let the engine to idle, the throttle is off and the clutch is engaged. At this moment the bike hitches pretty hard like the gas is coming in sequences. This is very uncomfortable. It is not happening when I pull the throttle and the engine speed is higher than idle.

I think this is happening in the pilot/idle circuits of gas and air. I cleaned the air filter and the carburetor but I cannot figure what else I can do.
What else can be: the benzine quality, the reed valve, the exhaust, the clutch? I don't want to try all these until I get some hints.

Please help with any suggestion. Maybe someone else experienced the same and found the reason.

Beta Or Sherco? 2006Ish £1700 To Spend

Hi, I haven't done trials riding for about 10 years but am looking to start again. I have a budget of £1700 and looking to buy a new bike. I've had Gassers and Beta's in the past (preffered Beta) but the bikes have changed a lot since I last rode them. With the budget I've got it looks like a 2006 is probably the best year I can get (poss. 2007). I don't fancy a Gasser as I've heard they can take a bit more to maintain. I have been swaying more to a 250 Sherco - Just because there seems to be more for sale and look like a nice bike. The Beta's don't look as if they have a big dip in the seat, but think this is just the rear mud guard design giving this appearance. Anyway, I'm would like something that's easy to ride and won't let me down... Any advice? P.S. am I also correct to stay clear of the 290 Sherco as I've heard these can be a bit harsh round tight technical bits? Thanks very much in advance for your help!!

Looking at the results, some riders have like 1100 marks for one day?
Looking I see riders score 50 marks for one section?

What makes you get a 50?

Brown bids for victory

Michael Brown has found himself in familiar territory at the Scottish Six Days Trial (SSDT) this week in Fort William. The 25 year-old Gas Gas rider from Scarborough, who has so far been runner-up in the SSDT four times (in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011), starts day six in third place, chasing his first ever win. With only one mark separating Brown from second-placed James Dabill (Beta), and current leader Dougie Lampkin (Gas Gas) just two marks in front, today's final battle for the top spot will be closely fought.

So will 2012 be Michael Brown's winning year? Speaking last night, Michael said: "I hope so. It's been a strange week. I haven't led all week, but I've always been there or thereabouts. I'm happy with how I'm riding. I've come close in the past, I think I lost by two marks one year so I've been in this position before, but we [the team] will just try and enjoy Saturday and hopefully we'll win."

Brown has experienced similar success in the ACU British Trials Championship in which he has also been the runner-up four times and has never won. However, Michael's fortunes appear to be changing. Last month he beat reigning British Champion and 2011 SSDT, victor James Dabill to win the opening round of the 2012 domestic series, which was also held in Fort William. Brown is aiming to repeat this success and to end today as winner of the 2012 Scottish Six Days Trial.

Commenting on what winning the SSDT today would mean to him and the Gas Gas UK team, Michael added: "This is one of my favourite trials of the year, and obviously for the factory, John Shirt [Gas Gas UK team manager] and everyone involved in the team it's a big event. Since being a kid I've been coming up here nearly every year, so to win would be a massive achievement for me."

How strong does Brown think his chances of winning today are? "Up until now, touch wood, I've not had a five. Every other year I've had maybe one five that has been a bit of a disaster. So I'll be aiming to keep off the fives, and hopefully other riders will make mistakes and we'll pip them to the post this time."

Brown will be in one of the final riders setting off on today's final 58-mile course across the Scottish Highlands. When asked whether he thought this would give him an advantage over some of his rivals riding in front of him, Michael answered: "Yes, I think so. We were at the back last year on Saturday and it seemed to be a lot easier. So hopefully there'll be some lines in the sections and there'll be a bit more grip, so we can just try to relax and ride a bit slower. A late number could be good."

One thing Michael said he would ensure if wins the 2012 Scottish Six Days Trial was: "There will be a big party in Fort William tonight."

View the full article on the SSDT Website

Couple Of Questions....

Hi all,

Got my first trials bike a 2007 Sherco 290 (altered timing and an S3 low comp head to tame it a bit ha ha ha)

I know a lot of people will tell me it's the wrong bike for a starter but hey ho that's life....

Couple of questions,

1. Tyre pressure, I'm reading 4psi rear 6psi front as a recommendation, would any of you change that for a 15st rider ???

2. Oil ratio ? Never had a premix 2t before, what would you recommend ????

Cheers all

Jitsie Air Filter

Has anyone yet determined if the Jitsie Ossa tr280 air filter is an addition to the regular filter, or a replacement? I have one and the dual foam filter looks like it could be meant as a replacement. At the very least it should make cleaning of the main filter less frequent as if it acts as a pre-filter it should catch 99% of the crap before it gets to the main.

Sunlingkau, I think you also have one, what do you think of it, and do you run it as a pre-filter?

Three-way fight to the wire to win the 2012 SSDT

After five long days of battle incredibly only two marks separate the top three riders, leaving everything set for a tight and tense finale to the 2012 Scottish Six Days Trial (SSDT). Dougie Lampkin (Gas Gas) will take a single mark lead into the final day of the event tomorrow as he bids to claim a record-breaking sixth win at this world famous event. His closest challenger James Dabill (Beta) rode himself right back into contention today, as he went clean on a day when his rivals all increased their tallies.

Both Lampkin and Dabill have previously tasted the winner's champagne in the Scottish Highlands, the latter having been victorious during last year's centenary SSDT and also in 2007, whilst Dougie has won the SSDT no less than five times already. Currently sitting in a close third place, Michael Brown (Gas Gas) will be going all out tomorrow to claim his first 'Scottish' win so as to bring to an end his series of four runners up finishes, the last of these bridesmaid performances coming just 12 months ago.

Lampkin saw his advantage at the head of the pack reduced today as he embarked on a damage limitation exercise whilst riding at the front of the field along with Brown. The Gas Gas duo rode the boulder strewn hazards at their slipperiest, whilst Dabill made the absolute most of his late start time. Early event leader Jordi Pascuet (JotaGas) has dropped off the leading pace slightly in the last two days and now finds himself in a scrap for a potential fourth place overall with Alexz Wigg (Gas Gas) who has improved as the week has worn on.

Emma Bristow (Ossa) has edged further clear of Becky Cook (Beta) in her quest to be the best female rider for the second year in a row. Given the size of her advantage, barring a disaster on day six she now looks the clear favourite to do so. Seventeen-year-old Bradley Cox has ridden himself into a similar position, and has every chance of walking away with the best newcomer trophy come tomorrow evening.

Andrew Anderson (JotaGas) remains the highest placed Scottish rider in the competition and will now focus on nursing home his new Spanish machine to claim this native prize. John Shirt (Gas Gas) is under severe pressure at the top of the Over 40 class, as Adam Norris (Beta) continues to close in on him with just one day remaining.

Friday proved to be the usual friendly route, with riders enjoying their tour of the peninsula and the limited off-road excursions, which gave them the opportunity to recover slightly after the two tough previous days in the saddle. Pipers Burn turned out to be the first real test for the top riders, with conditions being green and slippery for the early runners. The familiar stops thereafter at Glenuig, WD's, Laudale and Camasnarcroise offered a good variety of hazards, before the final run in provided a sting in the tail for many of the riders.

With the finish now in sight, the remaining riders have the task of making it through the last day, which will add another 58-miles to their weekly tally that stands at over 500 miles in total. Famous sections such as Callart Falls, Pipeline, Ben Nevis and finally Town Hall Brae will bring the 2012 Scottish Six Days Trial to a dramatic close, with only one rider out of the 276 who started being declared the winner.

View the full article on the SSDT Website
