Have found this article in an old issue of Moto Journal, scanned in OCR then used Google translation, which is literal and quite amusing, but you get the idea, bit like Todotrial. hope you find it interesting.
The pic is the third page as the others are mono and the pics are not good.

EXCLUSIVE minis test-Honda 310 of trial
“YE ESSAYS IT HONDA DI SHEPHERD by Carlos Dominguez
The return of the four-stroke in trial… Is it necessary to believe in it? With the turns of the tests of the Championship of the World 1977, Rob Shepherd succeeded all the same has to be classified regularly among the ten first. But ('technical evolution of this prototype is far from being finished. Honda seems despite everything good decides has to play the chart trial” until the end… Test a motor bike of trial, it is something of very running… But to arrive has to test a prototype reserve with the pilots of the most important factory of the world, it is something of special! And more still if the father of the motor bike is called Sammy Miller… To crown the whole, let us say that it is about the first attempt dune motor bike four-stroke for evincer I' hegemony of the two-strokes Spanish that same Sammy imposed on the British technique of there is a little more than ten years. Ultimately. Eternal I' fights of the two-stroke against the four-stroke, fights .qui always prevailed in all the sporting specialities. The valves and I' tree distributor do not resign has to be seen overcome by the cylinders full with holes! Two and four-stroke enemy brothers… This Honda is the model “Shorts stroke” (short stroke), that of official of the mark, Rob Shepherd and Nick Jefferies. Being an experimental proto, we could not obtain many data technical and Beautiful - too very few - that we publish are the fruit of a serious maintenance with I' Japanese engineer which accompanies these two pilots… II comes directly from Japan to deal with these motor bikes in their first phase experiment bruise. It is precisely for this reason that he did not mean too much of it to us; and the data which he agreed to reveal appeared to us of all way too optimistic… To explain the way to work of the first world manufacturer of motor bikes and us to give an account of his enormous potential economic, we will say simply that the Department Research & Development (R AND D) has six hundred engineers and technicians among whom two hundreds are engineers highly qualify and have a concrete specialization on vital and given points dune motor bike. These figures exceed the total number of workmen of any Spanish factory of motor bikes offices, administration, direction and engineers included/understood L But the economic potential cannot always dominate I' ingeniousness, ('improvisation and the sixth direction which accompanies mechanics. This practical part, necessary to the figures and the theory, seems title more of the cdte Latin that the Eastern ones… Fortunately how there remains something with the Spaniards! Sammy Miller contemplates his realization. The man who has fak to triumph the large four-stroke it has a fortnight there years, puffs which I' has detr8ne while working on one two Spanish times, returned has its first loves… The pilot, it is Nick Jefferies, official Honda as well as Rob Shepherd. In connection with ('Honda offensive, Mr. Don Fransisco X. Bulto, owner of Bultaco A pronounce a sentence marticulierement realistic and full with nuances: “Fortunately, the motor bikes of trial, and more still their engines, are entourees dune series of characteristics which escape the theory, leaving with the practice the care to finish the development. That gives to work part of poetry which makes vibrate any specialist. ” Would this Be romanticism? We I' are unaware of; but what is certain, it is that a motor bike of trial is tongue on table drawing, while being born and while developing with the turns of the tests on the ground… This engine four-stroke has surprised us by the great flexibility which it offers especially has mode low. The answers are so soft and so noble that they find on the muddy or very sandy grounds a sufficient adherence to advance without the wheel spinning and without the engine not bruising! This flexibility thus makes it possible to roll very, very slowly. So much so that when we aeons tests cater the engine by maintaining gases completely firm, the machine still made two or three meters before stopping… All that without arriving has to put only one foot per ground! If one with the precaution of tourney somewhat the handle before cater, the engine answers gently but with a traction; a progressive traction which points out a little the behavior of an electric motor. This flexibility finds obviously its best field use without adherence. But, n the other hand, a serious handicap constitutes in front of a walk, a ground “cuts ~, by strong steps or roots or tines which does not make it possible to go up sufficiently in mode. It will be noticed that any Spanish two-stroke reacts with strength has a violent gas blow, which tuff makes it possible to go up and climb without problem. But this same characteristic obstructs the pilot on grounds without adherence… Will be able-T-orr one day to combine the two characteristics in a same type of distribution? We do not know it, but the technology of the two systems tends has that.
The exhaust, tortuous and imposing, profiles im carry which recess… Notice lee drive screw (dens rim) to maintain the tire. Exciusif! Technique Honda engine In spite of the dumbness of I' engineer, we obtained a Set of data which make it possible despite everything to make us a ides of this groups propellant. II acts of one-cylinder A two valves for ('admission and different I' for I' exhaust. By as adopting a stroke shorter as the first prototype that made it possible to modify the cylinder head and to eliminate old I' systems has four valves. In connection with this engine has four valves and long stroke, Shepherd said to us that it pulled much more and allowed him to pass lee zones has strong c&tee with more facilitates, resembling thus more has a deux-remps, same A low mode. However, lee Japanese technicians believes more in this new prototype has reduced stroke. The capacity of this cylinder is envrion of 300cc, although the correct figure us garlic not co. revels. One sail, in addition, that the forgery of compression borders lei 8: 1. The food east ensure by a Keihin carburettor 24 mms in diameter. Compression and ('admission soot done slightly less than on a deuxtemps, _ lei figures of the Spanish engines slant around 9 or 10:1 for compression and of 27 mm for the diameter of the carb. Cases of this engine made out of magnesium, while the cylinder head and the cylinder made out of aluminium. The weight of ('together is identical A that of a two-stroke, although the cost price soil obviously more raises slant gives I' use of spsciaux alloys and titanium screw. Schappement is bulky. At the exit of the cylinder, it acts of a long tube, stroit and cylindrical. as I' requires any four-stroke which regards. But it was also necessary to build an enormous pot which profiles of all the free corners of the framework… The first room is under the filter. Towards ('arrear, the pot strangle to happen considerably behind I' shock absorber. The framework of this Honda is really Isger it is ad interim 'use of alloy of chromium molibdene and with the titanium screws. According to lei responsible Japanese, this Honda weighs, all full fails, 87 kg. If Ion compares the turning radius with that of Spanish, it seems well that Shepherd and Jefferies know big problems to transfer in the tortuous sections. Unless they do not raise the nose gear wheel and turns on that has ('arrear! While taking as point of reference ('axis of the crankshaft, one notices that the engine is rather well center within the framework. That is concretized by the fact that the motor bike soil difficult A to pull up. This characteristic has its advantages especially, in lee montses tongues and marked. But it is also a disadvantage in the grounds in staircases, or it is necessary to accelerate strongly and well has the advance (because of the response of the engine) so that the direct wheel does not knock violently on a walk. Under these conditions, lee front suspensions a reaction strange; especially lee shock absorbers late. Those rebound exagsrsment and cause it The breather (to evacuate lee gas of the tarter) includes/understands an enormous valve protegee by a lid in magnesium. On the right, elastic I' faFon Montesa Dimensioned 348 which maintains ('sells-tank unit in plas tick. The late brake is separated from the crown to avoid the shocks violent one lore brakings and accelerations. The crown is in dural. The tension of chains made by eccentrics notch. 1 jump of the motor bike. The front fork, entirely built ad interim 'factory Honda R AND D, is a little hard and with a first half of race pleasant although excessively slowing down. From second half, tree hardens extremely. The geometry of this framework points out that of Bultaco instinctively to us, including the position and ('late site of the shock absorbers. II is necessary well to think that it is Sammy Miller who A collaborates in construction and the development of Sherpa, and that it is him also which A draws most of this motor bike… The tube before framework, that which goes down from the steering column, is of rectangular section to offer a greater resistance. Arms of the oscillating fork late soot of the same profit. The tube which constitutes ('spine dorsal is dune bulky section and is duplicated above the carburettor. Note that the cylinder head is fixed has this spine dorsal by two metal plates. This Honda is particularly high on legs, with the result that the handlebar is tree haul compared to the sells and with the footrests. The handiness is obviously diminuee. The sells-tank unit is in a part, as on Montesa Cota 247. This “plastic Kit” emboite tree narrowly and the Wen assembly is not always tree easy… II is maintained by two slastic belts of inspiration Cota 348. The mudguards soot out of semi-rigid plastic and consequently breakable (one of them stait already has half breaks). The shock absorbers late soot has gas with interior tank. Their resorts soot not adjustable in hardness while those of the fork before the soot. As for the brakes, its snormement recalls those which soot montss on Ossa Trial MAR, as well by their drawings as by their dimensions. That has ('arrear is a biconical part of font. The crown in dural points out also cells to us of Ossa MAR. Light, but very long framework SMALL CONSIDERATIONS OF CONTROL - The startup is difficult because of the little of reduction as well as reduced race of the kick. - The shifting of speed is hard, has long race and of doubtful precision. - A low mode, it is the most flexible engine which we never have essays. - The position of conduits east let us boons, but the height of the handlebar will be regretted. The really narrow tank and the sells soot, which makes it possible to balance the body tree easily and of going from before behind in tail condition does not import. - The clutch does not have the great softness of any other Japanese motor bike; we have of it tits surprised. - To make trial with a noise of quatretemps is really odd and revel same a certain difficult mysterious air has to explain… can-title one day will have us to it to be accustomed!
Lighting is traditional: via pIaUnEes and centers central suet cam. The breather bulky eat and Is tube in rubber assembles dens Is tubes central framework. The engine Honda essayE is the second version. II is different from different I' from so race rEduke and sea two valves (instead of four previously). cylinder head is fixEe with the framework to reduce Lea vibrations. The framework is a simple stopped cradle. The Backbone of the framework, a tube of section particullE rement importance, is duplicated little before carburized tor. The tube which returns dens this beam nest other that the breather. The Beautiful-tank unit out of plastic is dune part. The tensioner of chains acts also as guide-chains. II is rather well protEgt bus it Was moME very prPs of the framework. On one of the two machines, it will be noticed that Lea shock absorbers late have one double point of anchoring in bottom. Cola makes it possible to vary height and I' inclinafson of will amortisseura. The gromono eat a trols hundreds and some DC. Garters soot out of magnesium and the cylinder head as well as roll aluminium soot. Note the length of aElector speeds ainai that [have mEtaliic plates which fix the cylinder head at the framework. II is obviously quite difficult to draw the conclusions dune motor bike so different from those to which us sums accustom. For ('moment, Honda is still far from being able to worry the Spanish two-strokes. Finally, one can think that this motor bike is a whim of Honda which dolt to find itself in a sttrie applicable exp6riences has others models of cross-country intend for always enigmatic and difficult walk quest that of the United States. 41110.11 Ift-XI, A . ,

The book - Four Stroke Finale - gives the complete Honda Trials story
with an insight into Sammy's involvement - Sammy favoured the long stroke
which Rob Shepard rode to many victories. ( My copy is on loan so not sure who published this book)

Hi Outlaw Dave!

"Four Stroke Finale" was written by my old friend, Tommy Sandham in conjunction with John Dickinson, published by Magor (Tommy's publishing company) the book now commands very high prices on e-bay usually about £60-£70 per copy. Tommy will produce an e-book on cd-rom version for those who want one without having to buy an old copy at hugely inflated prices, PM me if anyone wishes.
