Just tried my new (to me) 08 250 today without the flywheel weight, it seems quite a bit livelier more like my old Gasgas 250 (with a weight on!).

As the bike is sold with the weight fitted is it part of the whole package of a well balanced controllable bike with good traction?

Should we be tampering with a good proven setup just because it feels better, or more like what I was used to? :D

You just answered your own question.

The manufacturer will initially provide you with a product which is a basic, user friendly, universal set up for what they consider to be a 'standard' rider - there to be tweaked and moulded to your personal preference. The flywheel weight is merely a tunable 'option' - otherwise it wouldn't be removable!

If it didn't feel better you could put it back - likewise if you try a Dunlop instead of a Michelin or a slow throttle - etc, ad infinitum..........

As far as I know the bikes imported to UK are the only ones with flywheel weights. When I lived in Hong KOng ..NONE of the bikes imported had flywheel weights on. THerefore,,,(since thats where I started riding) thats what Im used too, and I much prefer it, so always take mine off.

Personally, I think its all down to the rider, I dont reckon a weight is suddenly gonna make one ride better in certain conditions.

Looking at your riding in the mud the other night, you might need to start riding with it on stu!!! :D
