I follow Big Johns adage ' you cant have too many motorcycles' so it has been easy for it to be in the garage ( next to the washing machines and freezer) AND undiscovered by mrs TS since its purchase and during the rebuild..
with a fresh tank of unleaded and 50.1 PJ1 the bike fired third kick. ticked over on choke ok and would tick over with help once warmed through. once the smoke had cleared (PJ1 used as a lube during assembly) turned it off and let cool. a final check and off we rode round the TS estate.
10 minutes and back at the garage the carby was adjusted slightly and off we went..
WHAT AN ENGINE.. rides very similAr to my beta, fairly soft on tickover ( will be better when i' Ve RE-adjusted it) and pulls and wheelies v. easily
not wanting to rush but first trial on the thing tommorow.... nice and steady..??

so thoughts on the 240 and its first ride.. engine revs well and pulls usably in sections in 4th! some carb adjsutments might improve as from 1/4 throttle in 3rd and up it can 'bog' a little ( i mean a little) will tick over easily all day, forks are very 'chopper' which suits my style of attack, but they are way to soft so some firming deffo req.
rear betors ( new) were up to the job of keeping my 95 kilos off the back tyre. brakes.. not used to this but fronts nearly had me over the bars a couple of times and rears had me stalling twice! so they work may just wind off the rear a bit and investigate a less agricultural rear brake lever.
overall bags of potential a bike that is genuinely usable in 2 nd and third on sections, i'll play with the forks and the rear brake pedal i'm also off to see a fabricater tommorow as i saw a fantic with nicely made alloy side panels/ seat base ( this will mean i can sit lower and narrower and save my precious plastic side panels..
oh by the way we won our class.. ( hands up though only two of us in it..) next trial in a fortnight.

Check with Mike at http://www.tryalsshop.com/ he supplied me with a sammy miller adj. rear brake lever . It works much better than the stock one , and he may have another laying about . And when you get used to it as is , go for the OKO from Chris , Mine will tractor off idle in any gear that's practical ... And get some WES progressive fork springs and set the preload spacers up so you get the same drop front and rear.
They are abit softer initially , but very rarely bottom out hard with my 200+lbs on them .
Glad you like the old girl .

just as prophesised by chris bike started straight away and ran easily on tickover in garage , warmed her up riding up and down drive , and with some tickling of the air screw and tickover shes purring on tick over steady as a rock . under way shes very smooth at tick over ( a little off 100% still but that will come with a little more 'play time') still all very controllable went up through gears ok so in an hour of fitting time and 15 minutes of tickling i've a bike that was better than before and the promise of more to come..
had the 240 seat and side panels off to move the rear mudguard further round and am having a shot at fabricating some alloy side panels combined with a seat base ( to save a little weight but mainly to reduce the length of leg req to touch the floor and to keep the panel and decals for resale. ( performance is everything cosmetics is for gurls..)

Next to the falcons , fork springs , footpegs , etc. etc. The absolute best mod to mine was the OKO , (although replacing the stock worn out , leaking shocks did make the bike 100% more ridable )

an hour ( including a chat with a motorbikeing jehovahs witness, who came round with the watch tower) playing with the throttle screw and air/ pilot screw and the bike is simply 99% spot on ( judged against my uber soft tickover Beta)
i had planned to take the bike up to my quarry but its coming down off the Pennines in stairods so a quick ride down the lane to railway emankment ( lots of long wet slippy grass and step slopes) and the bike rolled up and down as nice as pie , as good as i my beta and certainly better than my cub ( which is a very good bike)
at the trial on sunday the concensus was that it would need a second headgasket as it would 'fight a bit' or would be 'wizzy' ( there words not mine) but the half hour on the slippy stuff above it was very controllable and didnt spin out once.
so engine wise thats it craked as far as i'm concerned, i still have the forks to play with this afternoon and some head scratching regarding alloy side panels.
next trial is a week on sunday can't wait.
so the bottom line.. whats it cost to get here.
bike 240 pro circa 1981. bought from an ebay seller ( ironically in the next street!!) he withdrew the bike as it had lost compresssion and needed a new piston and re lining. bike had new cables, new plastics, new unused michelin tyres, new F and R brake shoes ( and the things were lathed to fit the bike) brand new Betor rear shocks, it was trial ready ( except for the engine..) cost 640
barral relined and new piston plus new steel kickstart all for 300 from bob wright ( smashing guy loads of advice)
oko carb from chris stevens ( classictrials) 105 (again loves his fantics loads of honest advice and i had the carb less than 18 hours after ordering it.. great service)
so for just over a grand i've got on paper and in practice a decent competative twinshock bike with all new consumables on it for 45 quid more than a grand. I think thats a fair deal. you could of course bought a 4 or five year old beta for that money but with all the plastics and new top end? or a p65 bike of dubious quality, certainly not a cub or any of the 'heavy metal.
now how to explain it to the wife..
