Looking for some help from the Honda experts, a friend of mine is interested in this Honda on ebay Clicky but my knowledge is limited with Hondas and I couldn't offer to much help. The bike looks gorgeous and the description of the work done is impressive, but we are not sure of the value of the engine modifications. Our uncertainty is born from ignorance so would appreciate your views. Thanks in advance.

It sure is pretty as they all are generally. I'm no Honda expert either! But I know it's been on ebay previously and didn't meet reserve, so either the money is not out there or it's perceived value is higher than it's real value.

if the engine is now close to a crf230f type of performance then it will be a great bike, but not sure if you would want to trial it as it looks too good to throw in the mud.

What I do know is the 230 uses a longer stroke/aftermarket crank available 20 yrs ago. The only gearbox I heard about is the Golner ones again from back in the day with closer ratios I believe, first to second anyway. :D

There is a nice modified 200/ 230 on www.shedworks.net

Yes, 230cc is achieved with a longer stroke as well as the overbore, furthest an overbore takes them is 220cc as far as I know. A jap specialist used to do oversize engine kits so maybe it's one of those, they also did a full 250cc conversion for the 200.

Certainly a very well presented bike, went over £3k last time and didn't make reserve so maybe reserve is at least £3.5k. Whether you want to pay that much for one is entirely a personal matter. For me, all the TLR/RTL/RS Hondas are over rated and way over priced, there are much more effective machines at a fraction of the price. Bottom line though, if someone wants it enough and is prepared to pay, then to them it's worth it and that is all that matters.

In terms of whether the mods make it more competitive than a standard TLR200, maybe, but the gain is negligible. Alloy swingarm looks nice, maybe weighs a bit less but won't make it ride any better. 230cc motor can't really be desrcribed as very powerful in all honesty. The TLR250 isn't exactly powerful so 230cc isn't going to 'very powerful'. Steering angle alteration is personal choice. I've ridden a TLR before and after the same mod and as I didn't find the standard set up a problem, didn't find the alteration any benefit - all down to individual preference. Lowered footrests definitely a benefit for tall riders as they are high in the standard position. Revised gears are probably a benefit but the original ratios aren't really a problem and perfectly useable. Front forks actuallly look like Reflex items but can't be 100% sure on that. TLR forks are a bit soft in damping and spring rate, Refelex even more so.

A good TLR200 (not Reflex) in standard trim, perhaps fitted with a WES or DEP exhaust could be bought for less than half, maybe a third of the price of this one and would prove every bit as useable. They may have fallen short of other makes back in their day (as did the TLR250) in terms of performance, but classic events these days are nowhere near as hard as the events back then. Therefore what were seen as shortcomings then are no longer evident as the bikes aren't required to perform at the same level as they were then, not even in the national championship, which has seen rounds won by riders on TY175 and standard TLR200.

So if you like the look of the bike and are prepared to pay the money then that is good enough reason to buy it. To start with a standard TLR200 for about £1200 and turn it into something like that one would cost a fair bit. Tank unit = £200, alloy swingarm = £350, Shocks = £150, exhaust = £150? (all price quotes approximate) plus all the other incidental expenses that would run to a few more hundred.

Do you need these mods to enjoy riding a TLR200 in classic events? - the answer is no you don't. If you just want it for the way it looks and are prepared to pay, then you've answered your own question.
