I personally cant see that being the case (It may well be the case but it's a real cr@ppy idea) thats not good then for the consumer.......
"Sorry Mr customer you'll have to wait for your 'racing' if you want one"?? You can then almost hear the "oh sorry they aren't making anymore" call 5 weeks after you place your order.
I cant see the point of releasing something then not making it available, especially a couple of months before you yearly special edition - Raga Rep - is launched.
The Raga rep is always built then sold so will be in stock when you want it.

The TYZ was over £5k and in early 97 it was £4400 or thereabouts for a Beta, Mont or Gas Gas
Then people started to realise you could grey import bikes form Spain for a fraction of the dealer price. I wouldnt want to comment on the VAT side of things but a guy turned up at my local trial in July 97 with a new 97 model gas gas he brought in himself from Spain, He paid £2200 for it.
Now i dont know what had happened currency wise at that time but by the end of the summer new bikes had dropped £1k and were circa £3500 and stayed that way until the last year or so.
Yes new bikes have been this expensive before but people started to look at alternatives and ultimately the economics of the situation were that a bike wouldnt sell at £4400 so the price had to drop. Montesa have recently found the same if reports of 900 bikes unsold are accurate.
Nobody can stop a company making a bike and naming a price but if people think its too dear then they wont pay for it.
In difficult economic times and with prices going up for bikes new bike sales must be affected.

And I know people who did that back when 250 gasser's were £2700-£3000 they could get them from Spain for £2000. But they don't do it today because the price is too close to make it worthwhile. I've no doubt that the Euro makers were making a bundle which is why the Japs pulled out when the price collapsed. They couldn't compete because of the overheads. I've always said Trials bikers are skinflints and I don't see any evidence of that changing. I mean ask them to stump up a fiver for club membership?? You'd think you'd asked many to cut off their right arm

Really all this angst. Two of my mates just received new GG racing models. One won't take it out of the house yet because it's winter but the other took it out last weekend and a mate with an 08 Raga who got to ride the new bike placed an order that night. Another with a Sherco said he would if he could afford it.
I'm not a GasGas rider as anybody from the Beta forum can attest, just can't seem to get along with them, but I've seen the newer bikes take some awful beatings and survive quite well.
I wouldn't accuse GasGas of being stupid. The best way to seize market share is to attack while the market is weak. This bike is clearly an aggressive stab at market share from the mid-level buyer. I would expect after the Raga comes out for the top end any leftover parts will end up in another economy model. Not every sale needs to be at the start of the season.
GasGas is showing a keen understanding of market dynamics.
