I just found a nice montesa cota 247, I am trying to what year it is,
this is what I know montesa cota 247 frame and engine # are the same.
it is a 21m 5 speed, there is a #stamp on the block 69.

Hi Stinger
Perhaps I am at risk of stating the obvious but:-
All cota 247's were 5 speed
All cota 247 frame numbers were prefixed 21M
What do you mean by the block being stamped 69 ?
Regards

I am looking to buy a little project for the winter, a 247 it has to be before 1972 as I would quite like to ride it in a couple of Spanish classic rounds. We had in the family a brand new one from John kersaw of Wickford around 78/79 but cant remember too much about it. With bultacos you have model numbers what do I look for in Montesas regarding dating it..
Hope this follows on from the original post.

Thanks in advance

69 is stamped on block at the rear of the motor on the mount
i do not know if this will help, brake pedal on the right side shift on the left?

Very difficult to date a 247 as they look pretty much the same. About '73 on had left hand gear change so it's probably a 4, 4b or a 5. Could be an Ulf Karson, they had clutch arm on top of the casing, not underneath. MK5 may also have had that too, can't remember, but cases could have been changed over the years by previous owners so doesn't really confirm anything.

Have a look here, these brochure photos may help
