Anyone got pics of a 199a or similar in non-standard colours, or modified?

Just looking for some inspiration....

Here is a 199A you find a summery and video on Zonatrial. The bike was shown in 2010,(the site is in Spanish).

As per previous post - he has trouble with tank turning white also!

If you have a poly tank, you don't have the option of a different colour. (unless someone has got around this?)

Also, has anyone else changed to Alpina \ Pursang triples like the one above and can comment please?

My latest project.

Bought this as a box of bits.

Matching engine numbers.

For you perfectionists SORRY, this is my bike and i have painted in to suit my taste.

Never liked the blue allover look so: white frame; specially painted poly prop (sealed with resin)tank, wheels brake drums sleeved, then built with stainless spokes and new rims, every bearing replaced, KTM fork seals, yolkes bored and sleeved parallel to sharpen steering (saves butchering the frame!).

Nearly a brand new sherpa, just need to sort the exhaust (easy).

I'll admit I'm a purist but there are "perfect" examples out there so one non standard machine isn't the end of the world. As long as a bike can be returned to original (which yours can) I dont have a problem.

Cracking looking job though.

Hi

Front pipe is in position, used a BultacoUK Model 80 pattern front pipe but cut the exhaust flange off and grafted a 198a flange in it,s place. Then welded a servicable middle box on the end.

Next job, sort out the tail pipe and powder coat both silencers leaving the front chrome..

  • 2 years later...

RETURN FROM THE DEAD!!

After nearly 3 years inactivity my 198a is up and running.

What stared as a box of bits has had a gound up rebuild,

  • Every bearing on the chassis and engine replaced
  • New Mikuni
  • Elextrex world ignition
  • Plastic tank lined with Slosh epoxy to stop petrol vapour bleed through and then resprayed
  • 199a Airfilter
  • Rebore
  • Powder coated frame.
  • Brakes overbored and steel lined
  • New rims and st/St spokes
  • Brake plates polished on the pivot bearing over bored and lined
  • Banana back box not the american (clubfoot)travesty that stifles sound and performance

I could go on, but the reward was starting second kick :-) then just need to change pilot to 35 and raise the needle one notch and she is sweet.

Final stage to MOT and Road register and take her out on one of the Sammy Miller rounds later in the year.

At least she is not another broken wreck on eBay.

Good looking bike Martin, a great rebuild.

Have you altered the steering stem position in the yokes or where the fork legs go through, does the change give no offset or run out bringing the legs & stem parallel ?

How much shorter is the wheelbase as a result of the change and does the wheel/mudguard still clear ok.

Hi

Rather than cut the frame I got the Yokes over bored, sleeved so that they were parallel to the head.

I will then cut the handlebar clamps off machine and weld approx. 6 mm ahead of the stem centre line (I did this on my 69 Sherpa).

I find this puts more weight over front wheel and gives better feel.

Last night just fitted the Magical fork springs, preload adjusters and rear shocks (350mm long).

Have used magicals since they came out and find they give a plush feel to the bike and do not bottom out, leaving plenty of clearance on the exhaust pipe.

I am not a very good rider but I just like things to be right.

Will post another picture after Easter and measure wheel base.

Regards

Martin
