Just bought myself a 1978 TY250 for a stop gap as
my C15 Pre 65 project is taking longer to build than
I thought.Just a couple of quick questions:- pre-mix
ratio? and what weight of fork oil and how much?

Well done - they are good bikes ! Cant help with the fork oil cos my book is at work,if no one else answers by the morning I'll look it up.
Mine has run happily since 2006 on Castrol TTS at 50-1.It rattled when I first built it and is exactly the same now,but it does all I ask of it and pulls very well.
I find the only problem with them is that they are so easy to ride and look after its tempting to leave my HT5 in the workshop and use the TY....

For oil quantity start with 160cc and take it from there, adding 10cc at a time if more is needed. Maximum is about 180cc I think, any more than that and they'll start to hydraulic lock.

SAE is down to personal preference but 10W is most common grade for older bikes. You may want to try heavier as the damping and springing on these bikes is fairly soft.

Thanks for the replies.Think my bike could
be a later model,it has black lines on the
tank decal and was registered in 1986.From
the frame number 493-3***** its a E model,
but on the TY site it could be an F model
due to the tank decals ?????

I use motul synthetic @ 40:1. which is on the safe side but seems to work well for me. 15w fork oil. Atf works in a pinch for fork oil as well.

Bike ready for its first run oot tomorrow,new tyres and
shocks.No ready for a Trial yet its was last August when
I last rode a bike so going for a wee practice.Rode it
round the garden Not quite up to my Scorpa but its the
route I want to take then when Alf's finished ride Pre 65.
See how it goes tomorrow.

Oot on the bike the day for a wee practice.Its a bit rattly
at lower r.p.m's ???Turns really quickly.Hopefully get another
run oot before the Melville.Have to get bike fit as I've used
bits of my body I didnae ken that existed.

TY 250s always had a death rattle if I recall correctly.

TY 250s always had a death rattle if I recall correctly. I tried one back in the day with a view to purchase and the owner explained away the alarming mechanical rattle on overrun with, "It's just the keys rattling in the toolbox".

Dont worry about the rattle - its just sign that the engine is still running !
It may get worse if you get it too hot or if its running lean,but they are not the quietest of motor...

Cheers for the replies.Only rode the bike today for the first time
proper.Need's a couple of tweaks but overall I'm pleased with it,
should be ready for the Melville trial.

Never made the Melville Trial due to flu but managed out on Sunday
riding at the Edinburgh St Georges Pre65/twinshock.Only done 2 laps
nothing to do with the bike just me(need to get bike fit).What a piece
of kit the auld TY is,pulls like a train,plenty low down grunt and unlike
my previous bike(Scorpa SY250) the seat comes in handy.

the ty not a bad bike getting used to mine will see how i get on with it now after i used the 4rt.is your front brake any good? will need to look at mine at easter.

Good cleaning of the brake, a little sanding of the liner and a couple of groove on the brakeshoe ( to help drain if wet ) and your in business. Oh yes, set the brakeshoe properly in the " drum " so they make good contact with the drum.
