Friends Beta 250/270 Rev Unknown

Hi Guys, New member here and I will be honest and tell you all right now Im clueless about the Beta range of bikes. Saw my first one toady for the first time !

So , I know this guy who is trying to replce the bearing behind the flywheel/stator on his beta 250/270. Im not sure exactly what revision it is either :( Sorry.

Anyway he got the flywheel puller home but while the central bolt appears to fit the crankshaft the screw thread on the outter body of the puller has nothing to screw into ! There is a gear thats seems to have been pressed into the flywheel and has a recess that is only slightly larger then the puller outter diameter but has no intenal thread for the puller to screw into even if it was meant to fit. He dosent have a manual apart from a crude exploded parts assembly manual he downloaded of the web and I only had a brief look at it and I didnt think it covered this area particularly well.The flywheel itself has 2 smaller taped holes 180 degrees apart which may be for locking pins or jacking screws or for the proper pullers maybe.

Personally I think hes got the wrong puller. Ive had a little look on the web tonight and I dont think the gear should be removed from the flywheel as the owner of the bike thinks. Im thinking that there should be a central bolt that screws into the crank and this should have an arm or bar that extends to both the smaller holes in the flywheel. This arm should also have two holes alighned to the two holes in the flywheel allowing studs to pass through the bar and into the flywheel and then be secured by nuts. Then finally the central bolt is slackened and removed thus pulling the whole assembly off.

I would rather confirm my thoughts and research the subject a little to gain an insight or the proper method for the task rather than risk sounding a fool or worse still giving the wrong advise and causing damage to the engine ! I would much appreciate your help lads as Id like to help this chap out as he may be able to get me a job !

Hi if he has the right puller it should screw into the flywheel,then tighten up the center bolt on the puller to push against the end of the crankshaft.as per pics bearing in mind these are of a beta evo engine but basically the same.

OK Bilks. That is the puller he has but I think Dan may have the jist of it. The flywheel is much thinner and while it has locating holes for a universal tool the holes are threaded which makes me believe they are for a puller mechanism. Ive removed a few flywheels in my time and they have all been relatively straightforward to get off but this one is just 'odd' If your right Dan and its the flywheel gear on the primary side and the gear is an integeral part of the flywheel then how would you suggest it is to be removed ? Would my idea work ? Like i said i oonly got a quick look at the engine and drawings but if my grasp on its construction is correct then it seems to be different than all the engines ivve ripped appart and put back together in so much that the primary is on the left hand side which would mean the alternator is on the right but isnt that where the clutch would be ? I think i might pop up and see him again and have a closer shiftie at the engine.

I think I see the cause of the confusion. Beta shipped two engine options for the primary drive. Before 2007 the 270cc engine had the integral flywheel on the primary drive gear. The 250cc engine had the primary gear without the additional flywheel. In 2007 Beta flipped the script and the 250 got the flywheel primary and the 270 had the plain gear. The parts drawing appears to show a gear that can be separated from the flywheel. It can't. The flywheel gear is one piece, the non-flywheel gear is a different piece that replaces the flywheel gear. You cannot remove the flywheel from the gear without machining it off.

To get it off the crank I think just a basic flywheel puller should do the trick with the correct screws for the two holes in the flywheel. I didn't think the primary was an interference fit but to be honest I never pulled one off my bikes.

I purchased a steering wheel puller to remove the flywheel on a 300 Evo. It came with the correct bolts to thread in, but I purchased longer ones just in case but didn't need them. On the Evo, the flywheel gear is matched at the factory to the clutch basket. If changing one of the two, you must change them both to insure they mesh correctly.

The photo shows the flywheel and puller for a 125cc. The larger displacement Evo has a different flywheel.
