New Trial - Ossa Or Cota

Hello all,

I read quite a lot of posts in this forum, because I am new to trial world. I started riding all-terrain 2 years ago on a DR350 (boy is that heavy) and now its time to buy a new bike.

I tried different Enduro bikes, but fell in love with the trial concept when I test drove a Gasgas (2010) and an Ossa TR280i (2013). I would also like to testride a Montesa Cota 4RT, but I cannot find any where I live (Cologne) and the current model is sold out.

So I guess I go with the 2013 Ossa. What do you think? Can you help me with any more claritiy? Thanks in advance.

All the best

Theyre all good bikes Tonad. Some of them have more aggressive power than others and they handle differently from one another. If i were you i would make the journey to a big trial and see what catches your eye. You can also try and ask for a short ride or a stand on the bike. Ideally you need to test ride them all. They're all good bikes. Of that there is no doubt :)

You would have to factor in a 2014 JTG 300 also??? Have peek at the Jotagas factory tour thread.

I think you have to plug and play a little with the Ossa mapping as well???

This indeed is an excellent idea. Thank you all for your replies so far.

My own opinion only.Maybe you would be fine with the Montesa.I think it's a bike that need's more commitment to ride good and if your a light weight like me(170 kg with boots)you will find it saps your strength.

You said you found the DR 350 heavy so if your new to trials, maybe a 2 stroke would be better for you and as someone has suggested here don't discount the Jotagas ,or indeed the Ossa .

I had a 2013 GasGas and it was fantastic to ride very controllable , fantastic suspension ,compared to the Montesa the overall quality is just not there though.Take availability of spares into consideration as well . Tough decision , but exciting one . Good luck with your choice .

Hi

I have been to a trial area today, I talked to many riders and I rode on a Beta 125 and Montesa Cota 4RT. (I didn't like the 4ST, because of the extra weight compared to a 2ST.)

I have the feeling that everybody says something else. Today I spoke to a guy who said he wouldn't buy the Ossa, but instead likes GasGas and Sherco very much and that I should buy one of these.

I guess I will now just buy any bike that I get my hand on that isn't too old and either GasGas, Beta or Sherco. Sigh :)

Greetings,

tonad

P.S. Todays talks were good, because everyone said it is not necessary to have a brand new bike, not at all. They even wanted to talk me into a 1000,- Euro antique bike, but I do not want something that is older than 3 or 4 years.

@shyted My weight is 60 kg naked.

HA HA tonad ,that's a funny comment at the last.

Hard work being bombarded with peoples preferences.

If i was to buy another two stroke,my first choice would be a 2012 200cc Beta.My second ,the 2014 Jotagas 250 and the last 2013 TXT 250 pro.

I have a year 2000 GasGas 280 Andorra and it's a good bike . The one thing i would say about it is the throttle is like a trigger, and when you pull it BOOM!

A good mate of mine has a 200 Beta. It's a great bike and that's why it would be my first choice. The reason for me saying that is i ride the bike , and not the other way round .

Good luck.

I have one of each... my first trials bike is an Ossa and it is light and responsive.. as I get better I can do so much more with it....but I have found it unreliable and fiddly to work on. Now all sorted out and a joy to work out new moves on.

The cota is much more robust, a little heavier with the really smooth, tractable engine power of a 4stroke. Much easier to start and no messing about with mixing oil.

Saying all that I am torn between the 2..maybe the ossa is easier to learn on but the cota does more for me now I know a bit more. Both are a lot quieter than an enduro bike and will get you looking at the same countryside in a new way. Whatever you buy will be right so dont stress and get to join the zen masters of motorcycle sport any way you can!

This is indeed very helpful.

And yes you are right. I surely doesnt matter what I buy: GasGas, Beta, Montesa, Sherco, Ossa are all good. Thanks.

Hi all,

I now own an Ossa TR280i. I like the bike. It is so light and responsive. Much more fun for me than riding Enduro. I get used to it more and more and wouldnt want to give it back.

I figured it is best to buy what the local dealer supports and I like his taste :)

Have fun

are the ossa gearbox issues resolved? i met a guy who worked as a mechanic in a trials shop and the first models apparently had a fairly high failure rate... it was meant to be fixed in the 2013 model but he reckons time would tell if it was sorted or not.

at least easily fixed with the cartridge style gearbox just lifting out. not bagging the bike, the one i rode was a pleasure to ride!

Hi sherconoob,

they changed it in the 2014 model. Mine got replaced with due to a defect and since then (2013) it works like a charm.

Riding the bike is a pleasure indeed!
