Beta Zero Questions.

I just bought a purple Jordie Tarres Zero and have a few questions. I see there where several engine sizes in the zero's and see no markings on the cylinder like most Japanese would have but there is a 258A on the cylinder head so I'm hopeing it's the 260cc, does that sound right?

The clutch was draggy and it's shifting was notchy so I drained and refilled with Dexron 3 ATF. The clutch work fine now as well as the gear box. I don't ride it hard as I'm starting over after a long break, so is the AFT ok for mild riding? Many Thanks.

The `92 was a great bike. For whatever reason you have a `90 rear hub. The rear brake sucked and there is a rubber rebuild kit that needed replaced often. Before anything else I would pull off the water pump cover as they had a severe corrosion issue. Might also check the skid plate bolts.

Thanks guys. The water pump cover is newer than the rest of the bike so hopeing it's ok as the coolant is nice and clean. Already pulled the skid plate and straighend it and welded up a couple spots. For right now the front brake is the only one giveing me issues as it looses prime once in a while but is above the min fill line and the rubber baffle is good. The front pads act like they had a fork seal leak on them as they wont lock the front wheel. Might hit em with some brake cleaner and see if that helps.

If it is corrorded inside the pump case and cylinder jacket there is probalby nothing that can be done about that is there? I assume the case is magniesium and once severe corrosion starts it's pretty hopeless? Atleast that's the way it is with aircraft parts, so I guess I need some schooling on this issue. Thanks for taking the time to help.

I had one of these, but a "91.

They came with either a 240 or 260 motor.

I bought mine "in boxes" as someone had taken it apart for some reason, turned out the seals/bearing on the water pump shaft inside the motor failed, I only found this out after I've screwed it back together!

Later I bought a knackered second hand motor for some spares and that had done the same!

The swinging arms was also noted for cracking, straight through the tops of the tubes that house the bearings for the pivot.

Can be welded if you can find someone talented with alloy welding.

I also remember a few slips that caused me to land on that square edged tank/frame, that made my eyes water!

Other than that, a great bike and I think Lampkins can supply most parts without too much trouble

Noted on the Nutcracker :) I tinker with it more than ride it so far but thats the way I am. Ill inspect all these problem areas and repair as long as parts are available and somewhat reasonable. I have a TIG welder at home as well as a lathe and mill. Think Ill clean the entire exhaust next and repac the silincer. Going to try a hot soap strip tank at a chrome shop to clean it. It should clean it spotless and its safe for Alum. Anyone know if the water pump case is available if needed?

  • 4 weeks later...

I'll throw in a little update. I replaced the front pads and the braking power still sucks as well as the annoying front master cylinder loseing build up about half the time. I'm thinking of buying a new master cyl and the original Brembo is still available as well as as a AJP which is supposed to be an improvement but cost more and does not seem to come with banjo bolt and maybe some other hardware to install it so wondering if it's even worth the upgrade on such an old bike and novice rider. It will need some fork seals soon and has a nick in the chrome on the L/H slider which I think a rechrome will be in order.

Other than that I ride it about every day for a half hour or so and it starts and runs real well and the fan is working good so a little TLC is not to hard to swallow.

PS: I did bleed the front master cyl pretty good and it did not help.
