2014 R.r Tank Cover And Brake Adjuster Available?

Hi Guys,

At long last bike has arrived in Oz.

Please can someone advise if a tank protector is available for the new model?

and more importantly, the bike has been delivered with brake light switch in front and rear brakes, this means not able to adjust the reach on the front lever, the thread of the switch is not metric and is about 8.5mm, completely different to the AJP master cylinder on my 06 bike. So again any clue as to who may stock the correct size adjuster.

Thanks in advance, and yes the motor is very different from the 06 model and felt very much smoother and torquey. The suspension still feels very tight and I think needs quite a bit more riding before attempting to set up differently, the rear shock in particular does not seem to respond much to changes in damping at this stage.

I removed the rear brake switch completely. The front I removed the inner and left the outer shell that adjusts lever.

I had fitted an hour meter under body section on top of Throttle Body. I got sick of having to start bike for 20 secs when cold to read meter when home. I have a new position for it so I can read it on last shut -off of the day and record motor hrs. Fabricated a simple stainless bracket that mounts off tank bolt.

I checked valves clearances at 3 hrs. They were all in spec! You need to remove tank and injector to gain access to valve covers. I used feeler strips and bent them to suit. I cut an allen key and mounted it in a socket to torque bolts to spec for injector housing bolts. Make sure you place a touch of lube on the injector O ring tapered receiver when replacing injector. I keep spare O rings but have used original 3 times in/out so will replace next out.

Drop the oils at 3 hrs, I got a fair metallic looking oils at 3 hrs. Torque the drain bolts. If reusing the copper washers check they are flat, if not, rub on 1000 wet and dry on a bit of glass if you can, this flattens for re-use and no leak. Ideally you would heat the washer to anneal it (soften) as it work hardens in its tightened state.

The filter is a pain but an art worth learning. I didn't have to replace case gasket for first filter change but had two spare ones just in case. If you are careful it comes off without breaking. I cleaned motor side gasket area with lint free cloth and brakekleen and just put cover back on... no leaks. Be careful, stator magnet grabs cover when near home.

I didn't replace O rings in filter housing because they looked good! Will replace every second or third filter change. Filter is hard to manipulate in and out but can be done, Take ya time. Be really clean when removing cover... wash bike first.

Torque the cover bolts in pattern suggested for best practice to not distort cover and/or have a leak. I use an inch pound wrench to be more accurate there. Be careful around harness entry into cover.

I've gone up two teeth on rear (to 43) to slow bike a little and was a good improvement for me. I'm using aftermarket air filters to have a few on hand to swap out. I get all parts from Tarp in Sydney. Mount filter on cover tangs before installing on bike.

I went over the bike and generally checked fasteners, found couple loose. Also tidied up wiring around coil et ecetera.

Enjoy the Cota.... I love mine!

Pic of hour meter....

Disregard above if you are already into the mechs of them!

Thanks Mags,

Very neat mounting. Agree with comments have had 4RT's since 2005 and have been brilliantly reliable. Just would like to fit tank protector if available, have had Mitani one on the old shaper tanks since the start and it is full of deep gouges and dings, so had been doing a lot of protecting !!!

Mitani is, or will be, making a cover. But I haven't seen them listed yet by UK or EU Mitani sources.

Another little tip... my kickstart hits the foot peg if you use full stroke of kickstart... it scored the kickstart end before I was aware of it. I used a bit of rubber to protect it but it got chewed a little as well. Now I have a piece of thin wall stainless on boot contact area of kickstart until a better solution.

I don't use the full stroke to start and it seems fine but occasionally it still hits.

Banyeres has the 2014 model year tank covers in stock now, in either black or silver. Just listed them today.

FWIW, I wouldn't think the earlier tank cover shape would fit very well... it wouldn't match the tank / fender junction and wouldn't fit the tank contour. Not sure about the gas cap hole, but it might be located differently too.

Thanks for the heads up Sportsawyer!

Just had a peek... they are $130 aussie and probably about $50-70 freight.

Do the covers eventually put rub marks on the tank paint? Or maybe they have rubber separators or something?

The photos I've seen only show the top side, and I haven't seen one in real life. So don't know if there are any separators. Either way I'd expect they could cause rub marks, and if it was an issue you could use some tape on the tank.

I know it's not the goal of the original post, but I've looked at these covers as more a shroud for an already damaged or otherwise uglified but usable tank. More like the covers for Mitani SP3 type flat tanks, which don't have a nice finish on the aluminum (like the SP1 type flat tanks) and use the cover as a cosmetic layer.

Easy to deal with, cover your fuel tank with masking tape or gaffer tape, before putting cover on. It will not scratch the tank then and you won't be able to see the tape under the cover. Job done.

Thanks Mate,

Banyeres I see is often recommended as a supplier, OK if you know what you want but the part descriptions often leave me with no idea what they are!!!!

BTW I think the Jitsie adjuster J1611-06221 will fit the brake switch thread size, (so it says)
