How To Make A Txt Engine Quieter?

Hi Guys, just a quick question...... how do you make a Txt pro engine quieter? as I have seen two bikes now (mine a 03 txt pro 280) and (mates a 06 txt pro 300) both these bikes are loud as hell !!! is it because the bikes are old and the exhaust packing has worn out? would newer exhaust system be better?

Is it the engine that's noises, or the exhaust note.

If it's engine, what type of noise. Rumbling at the bottom, mains!, rattling at the top, little end, let us know.

If the exhaust is loud, then re-pack it. Do not ask a bike shop for a new exhaust, they'll be rubbing their hands together each time you walk in !

Re-packing is easy and there's a link to it in the technical section on here, or a video on YouTube from gas gasman.

its just the exhaust note thats loud! one to many flips I think! not sure about re-packing as the whole exhaust system has seen better days...........

A worn out Sherco can be very loud. It`s not cheap, but a new pipe is the cure. A friend had a loud pipe for several years. He just moved to a property where he could ride. He bought a new exhaust, just so he did not become that guy. Our TXT, I recently burned out the middle pipe and cleaned out the silencer. At the moment it has no packing in it. It is louder, but still not as loud as some other brands.

Middle boxes can also be re-packed: Here's one from a Bultaco but it's the same principle. Only needs some new damping wool, some silicone sealant on the mating edges, a couple of rivets and bob's your uncle

Nice pics of how to cut the back off a center and repair it with a new piece of material. I see people weld or pop rivet the new piece on. I prefer to put it on with screws so it is easy to remove the next time.

Both the center and tail sections do need to be properly cleaned and packed. Why not make it easy to do them both?

And thanks to all who keep their bikes quiet. We have enough challenges finding and keeping riding areas. Loud bikes only aggravate the neighbors who then try to limit our riding even more.

nice pics Guys, ...........yeah I dont understand why the bike manufacturers dont just make something eazer to re-pack? ......... I think having a quiet bike is a good thing, that is just one of the many perks of trials, It must be a bummer tho if you have limited places available to ride....... glad I ant faced with that :icon_salut: its kinda funny tho, where I ride on the mountains and cliff edges where I live, I always have respect for the area I am in, but I find that the worst offenders are "Hill walkers" leaving rubbish behind them! and if I do the same trial again a few days later I rarely see my tyre track! but I can always spot foot prints and rubish tho, ( not every hill walker falls under this category and its down to the individual themselfs) but its is kinda annoying when people automatically brand you as a vigilante on a motorcycle! (ha rant over!)....

anyway thanks for posting up the exhaust replys fellow trials bikers, hope you have good weekend and get plenty of time in on the bikes :irish:

I've used pop nuts at work on other stuff, should be no problem, but make sure you pop them tight enough or the nut might rotate after some use.
Also, take in to account that the holes in the cover must be larger so the cover fits tightly on the exhaust. (After popping a nut there's a small protruding flange on the outside)

I have used some nuts that are similar to those pop-nuts. Those ones I used had a flange with holes that were designed to use some small rivets to hold the nut plate in place. I chose to safety wire them on using stainless wire. A little high temp silicone sealed the cover plate to the silencer.

After getting my Beta Techno to stop popping by adjusting the air screw, I'm not having the same luck with the fuel screw (the small one next to the fat idle screw) on my 2004 TXT 280 with a Delorotto carb.

The more I turn in the fuel screw (to lean the bike out) the less she pops. But she is still popping terribly. New packing will help but that won't cure the pop. Bike was used just a few hours after the last 5 years. I drained the gas and I'm using race gas and 75:1.

Any ideas? Different plug? Clogged jet?
