Hi

I'm looking o get into trials to improve my riding ability and to have some fun. I found a 2002 Montesa 315r for sale locally for $2000 usd, I took a look at it and the exhaust will need to be replaced, the header is dented p pretty good and the muffler has been completely worn through by a rubbing rear tire, also the rear wheel bearing was a bit loose, the bike also had scratches and such that I would imagine are typical of a used trials bike...the good side it started first kick and idled pretty well. I'm wondering if this bike is worth buying in this condition and what a good price would be (and where would I find a new complete exhaust for one of these) or should I wait until something better comes along?

thanks for your input

Mike

I would check the average price that that model and year are selling for on a certain auction site.

If you like the price which is always negotiable go for it, replace the wheel bearing and give the bike a service and replace the exhaust if it is affecting the running of the bike, if not just use it and enjoy it.

cheers

John.

I'm very hesitant in giving advice on such a short description and only one picture from afar.

Check all the bearings for play or rough movement: wheels, headset swing arm and dog bones/ link system.

Replacing almost the entire exhaust system is going to be a (very) costly affair I'm afraid.

Make sure it has no leaks: water, gearbox, front suspension...

Get the engine in operating temperature and check for rattles from the engine and smooth clutch action etc...

If they are well maintained and not mistreated, 315R's are solid bikes.

might be possible to get the dents out of the pipe(try a motocross shop )silencer can be repaired by welding a plate to it if it's mechanically sound go for it Don't know about USA prices but it would be a lot less in uk

Just guessing this does not belong to a trials rider? The 315 was a great bike. If it runs good, just patch the muffler or the FMF all purpose muffler is easily adaptable. I`m sure the price is somewhat negotiable. Trouble is we do not have many used bikes available in the USA.

If you download a parts list for the 315R you can order parts at any Honda dealer if you give them the part number

2014 was the first year American Honda sold a Montesa trials bike. No parts available on this side of the pond that are not brought in from other means.

I bought a 2001 315 and love it. When bought I changed the spark plug renewed fluids and changed/greased some bearings. Ie suspension and rear wheel. Keeps on going and only need to clean air filter often, and wash her after a good muddy day in the mountains. Ps. My front exhaust pipe is a bit bashed in and its never given me any problems with performance etc.
