Leaking Fuel?

Hi all, I'm just posting this question for a mate who rides an 2014 Evo 200 and has the following ongoing problem.

Since new the fuel cap on the tank has leaked from the breather tube. The supplier has sent replacement caps but they all leak the same. The last one was supplied from the suppliers own bike along with the comments "I know this one does not leak", well it does on this bike.

So much fuel has leaked out that the decals are lifting or missing in areas where the fuel has reached. Some time ago I suggested he fit a bit of hose with and external one way valve on top to the cap, but he wants this problem sorted.

Any body experienced this or may know of a cause? Oh and a remedy.

Cheers Taff

Sounds strange that its leaking out the breather hose on that bike when it did not on the donor bike.

I had leakage at the cap on my long range tank. The fuel was coming out past the rubber oring on the cap. I installed an additional oring and the problem went away.

Hi all, thanks for the reply's, I think I'll show my mate how to use this forum then can answer the questions. I know he's looked for cracks, played with O ring seals. When I had a go of the bike when new [as you do] my mate said" what do you think"? I remember my reply was "the fuel fumes are getting to me", and that's when bike was only a couple of weeks old. He did say he sees it pour out on steep down hills. Thanks anyway I'll pass this all on.

Hi all, the continuing saga of the fuel leak gets stranger. My mate [he's no fun to ride with anymore :wall: ] put a longer length hose on his fuel cap [clear this time] and put a loop in it to try to stem the flow. After a short 10 minute ride up a rocky creek we stopped to see what was happening and found that even at standstill with the bike on level ground fuel was coming up the pipe, you could see air bubbles rising, same as when bleeding brake/clutch fluid and fuel was all over the bike.

The Aussie Beta dealer/importer has no idea, so my mate is contacting Beta themselves. I'll keep you posted. One suggestion was the summer heat up here in North Queensland but we dispelled that myth as he bought the bike in winter and still had the same problem. Mind you our winter is warmer than summer in the importers part of Aussie. His bike looks a wreck, fuel even melted his name plate on the front of the bike and dripped onto the fork sliders and set so hard it took some removing. Luckily he spotted it before a ride or he would be up for new fork seals.

Your filler cap should have a mechanism on the underside to prevent this, your friends may be faulty or missing. If you post photo's of the filler cap underside someone with a 2014 may be able to advise, its yellow plastic on a 2012.

Ok only two things I can think of here;

1. The hose on his cap is so long it ends below the tank level and acts like a siphon. The problem with this idea is it would only drain what was in the hose since the cap is above the fuel level.

2. Somehow engine heat is boiling his fuel. I've only ever seen this on a Bultaco with a fiberglass tank.

Both of these are highly unlikely. More likely he has a bad weld or crack on the frame/tank and only thinks it's the fuel filler.

Thanks for the replies folks. No its definetley the tank cap, short hose long hose fuel still bubbles out up the hose. Hose is up over the bars [as with most bikes] In fact it started with the original Beta hose from new.

I did a Google of the problem and past the info on to my mate. There are many older posts where riders have complained about this problem with their Beta's, and one states that Beta have a billet aluminium cap available. I have found after market versions of these to suit Beta's.

I think heat could be contributing to the problem, but why just this bike. I'll see if we can get some photos.

On my 2013 there is just a short hose that tucks back under the plastic tank cover. Do you run some odd fuel that has an exceptionally low boiling point or some odd foaming characteristics? Does the bike run properly?

Oh wait a minute, Aussie eh? There's your problem. You're upside down!

:hyper: Very funny, at least when we fall off we are the right way up :D . Regular super unleaded as always. The hose was the way you described but that's what took all the decals off the tank so was rerouted over the bars.. The bike runs real good and starts first kick.

I ran across this same thing on a old 315 Montesa a long time ago.

A few questions:

Is the fuel petcock in the reserve position or normal position? Switch it over whilst the bike is running.

What carb is on the bike? Is the float bowl touching the engine cases at any point?

What happens if you run the bike on a stand with the gas cap off (with just a little bit of fuel in the tank). What do you observe the fuel doing?

Whilst the gas cap is off and the engine is running put the palm of your hand over the gas spigot closing it off, does the bike stop after a minute or so, does the idle change?

What happens if you put your thumb over the hose, and or stuff some cotton wool or something else into the end of the fuel hose or even fold back and close off the hose to the atmosphere in the end of the fuel hose, does it eventually stop the engine?

Please let us know the answers to these questions.

Thanks Billyt, hey we drink billy tea over here :D any way I'll get back to my mate for the answers. It might be time he took over this thread anyway might save some time. He said he enjoyed his ride today as could not smell fuel, he had run the hose far away from him, even so its not good to have fuel getting out of the tank on a 37deg C day.
