mags Posted January 23, 2015 Report Share Posted January 23, 2015 It must be cold or snowy or just plain freezing for most of you in Europe and the USA for that matter? So are you trialling much or just getting some static practice in the shed with a doona wrapped around ya? We stop here in the dead middle of summer, maybe the hottest 4 weeks or so in the middle of summer, both trials and enduro as it hits 35-40 deg C and the UV rating hits mega skin cancer zone! Stopping for the month gives a chance to celebrate xmas have some hols et cetera but we ride the trials bikes the other 11 months. We ride the road bikes through the summer though... hottest day this year out on the bike was 41 deg C at 6pm... riding down the highway! I pulled my visor up and eyes started watering from hot wind hitting face... so it was riding with visor shut!! Stop every hour or so to hydrate. Silly question... having never been near any snow in my life... do you trial in the less snowy areas??? Or if not snowing but mega cold you still ride trials? taffe Posted January 23, 2015 Report Share Posted January 23, 2015 Hi Mags, I've been on holidays in Adelaide South Australia for the last month, can't believe I've lost a months riding. My mate back in N Queensland keeps telling me about the rides I've missed and to rub it in sent me photos, must have been about 12 of the guys riding over the New Years break. Must have been 36-38C days We don't have a break just ride earlier in the day 7am for the hot season, but even then stop every 10-15 minutes for a drink. As I said I'm in Adeliade, my son has two bikes, it's as cold as, (summer) most of the time, but we can't ride due to fire bans on all riding areas. Get it while you can I say. slicktop Posted January 23, 2015 Report Share Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) Well Mags, you triggered a flashback. Almost to the day last year I received my evo300. There was about three inches of ice on the ground and treacherous on the roads. The freight was a few days late but the bike finally arrived. I put the bars on, filled it with fluid and fired it up. I was careful enough to push it to an open area then hopped on and let out the clutch. Luckily I had the kill lanyard on so I didn't have to go to far to retrieve the thing. axulsuv Posted January 24, 2015 Report Share Posted January 24, 2015 I won the 2008 TS championship here in the southeast because of a snowy/icy event , must have been my youth riding in the snow in New England came back to me ... But I'm planning to go on a Fun ride Sunday , should be 50+ degrees F. and sunny after three days of rain , so the mud should be great !!!(traction practice !) I may even take my section out and see how we get along ... or decide to sell the modern bike , I can't help it I'm happy on my trusty 240 pro ... Our main riding area 70 miles away is pretty clear, except on the backside of the hills. We skip January, but our first event is in two weeks! Everyone loved it,about 70 turned up,real nice change and gives the old hands a chance to shine as an old fashioned keep rolling technique works best. dan williams Posted January 24, 2015 Report Share Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) I used to ride most of the winter, shoveling out sections. Must be getting old. Snowing here just north of Boston but there's not been much this year and the ground was bare before today. No like where my in-laws live south of Buffalo where they got 8' in three days followed by 60F temps and rain. I should add that snow isn't bad. Ice as Heather pointed out is really tricky on uneven surfaces. It's the ice under snow that is really evil. Mega cold is just miserable. Hands hurt, feet hurt, nose hairs hurt and the bikes will only start with a little propane torch TLC (tender loving care) to the cylinder. Oh I should also add that not just the rocks but everything is hard as a rock but at least you're bundled up enough that it doesn't hurt too much. Oh yeah, ski pants will keep you warm but will melt on the exhaust header. Deep snow is a lot like riding deep sand except worse. guys Posted January 24, 2015 Report Share Posted January 24, 2015 Our event for tomorrow has been canceled because it snowed a little bit today. I guess it was to difficult to mark the course out in the snow. Temperatures are around the freezing point or at about 5°C, so thats not so bad. The Christmas Pleasure trial in Arnhem Holland was also cancelled due to bad weather. As long as the roads are open so I can get to the event, I don't mind a little snow. 0007 Posted January 26, 2015 Report Share Posted January 26, 2015 I have ridden in 20-40cm of snow a few times It's surprising how well a trials bike works in snow, it's a bit like sand, you stay on the gas and keep your weight back and be ready for a little slippy slidy It's easier to be first or second and cut your own line as the tire groove is sketchy Always wanted to ride on hard crust, it's hard to find but ive done it on atv's and dirt bikes and it's fun as heck Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
