Parts Needed To Install 86 Atc200X Cylinder On My Tlr200?

The 1986 and later ATC200X engine is completely different than your xr200/tlr200 engine family. Nothing is in interchangeable from the 1986 and later 200x engine and any tlr/xr engine. You need to look for a 1983-1985 ATC200X cylinder, which will bolt on with no modifications. Be aware if you are looking on American ebay, most 83-85 atc200x cylinders listed are scams by fraudsters and are just regular small fin cylinders. The supply of big fin ATC200X 1983-1985 cylinders has almost dried up because of the great demand and some people are trying to sell anything. I've done many of these swaps over the years.

How can you identify the 83-85 ATC200X cylinder? I have an old ATC200 top end to get rid of but am not sure of the year, mabe 82. It has a recess in the piston, sort of a negative dome if that helps to identify. The cam along with the journals is gone so I can't go by that.

No that's a standard cylinder. It would be off the more common ATC200M, ATC200S or ATC 200ES these three were the more common utilitarian automatic clutch 200's. The ATC200X was a racer with a manual clutch and a forwards kickstarter like a fantic trials bike. The ATC200X was only manufactured those three years I mentioned and sold in small quantities, hence why they are so sought after. The big fin cylinder is very obvious as it is much larger on the exterior.

Found the correct year X cylinder. How much compression is just right for the freshen up? I'm a long time rider/ dabbler but uncomfortable in most B lines... I at least I've remained consistent over the years.

A friend suggests 10.5:1 ...

I'm a scared traction issues are more likely & kind like the forgiving weenie motor.

What Yunz think?

We always ran stock XR200R pistons which are 10.1. The increase in compression will give the engine a lot more snap, but doesn't make it any harder to ride. The stock XR200 piston is cast not forged, also you have to buy everything separetly, piston , rings, wrist pin, cirlips, so it gets expensive.

Nowadays most people use the wiesco piston kit, it comes with everything and is much cheaper. It is 10.25.1 compression ratio but I cant tell the difference. The wiesco is forged and much higher quality than the stock cast Honda pistons and works great. The ATC200X cylinder and all the other ATC200's as well are 192cc versus the 195cc of the XL,XR,TLR engines, so since you have to remove so much cylinder material when boring, just go with the smallest wiesco piston 65.5mm. The outside diameter of the cylinder sleeve is the same on the 200X as the reflex sleeve so don't worry about making the sleeve too thin. Wiesco make 4 oversizes up to 67mm in .5 mm increments. Many vendors on U S ebay sell the wiesco piston, listed under XR200 so lots of competition for your business hence low prices if you look carefully.

Had a great trial near Ashland city, tn yesterday. Afterwards I rode Dustin Ginder's reflex & really enjoyed it! A lil "hotter" than i need, but very controllable ...

B&J Racing did a 35mm marzzochi fork & nicely damped Falcon's out back. Bob is gonna do me a TY mono fork & I gotta gets me a pair of those shocks!

I think the 10.5 or so to one should be fine.

Bob's Falcon's will help you so much with traction  ...I've never ridden hockeyboys latest evolution of the reflex , but have modded my son's 200 to mimic it as far as carb & tune . (unless Bob has done something unorthodox ...) and for a basically stock reflex with some intake tweaks , it performs quite well . I should have been at Chip's this weekend , but life gets in the way of my riding ... Build the $hit out of yours and run ave gas in it and it will love you back ...

Hey Mark (tlrmark),

Is the stock TLR200 head being used or are you using the ATC head (only gaining a benefit if using both ATC cylinder and head)?

 

The cam, ignition pick up and mechanical advance retard unit from the ATC is also being used?

 

Any chance you could provide measurements or a good way to id the correct cylinder (and head)?

Something I could use to convey part information when I'm dealing with a seller? I do understand it's easy enough to see differences side by side, but when that is not an option what can I communicate that will describe the correct parts I'm after?
