What Montesa Have I Got

I purchased this today as I fancied a twinshock mont and a bit of a project

The frame and engine number is 21m51607

I've looked online and all I can tell is its a 247 no idea about how you date it

If anyone could shed any light on it I'd appreciate it because I'll be needing a few bits and bobs

I'm clueless with these old things thought it was just the tank that sits under the fibreglass cover , it fits pretty well

Also what do you do with the kick start just take it off and rotate it back

Would a 248 still have the 21m number

Well thats sorted most of my questions , thanks

The only other thing is what to do with it

Do I put it back to original or (try to)

Or do it how I want or like it

I think the tank is swaying it towards modding it ,because I like the look better

Are they rare ,would it be considered sacrilege

What's the general consensus

They are rare indeed, mainly because the 349 sold alongside the 248 was seen to be a better bike (they were not desirable when new which is why they are rare now)

However nowadays some oldies like me who still love riding twinshocks see things differently than we did when we were kids, and nowadays I would prefer to ride a 248 than a 349 of the same year

As far as making it look nice, I've recently seen Montesas of that era that have modern build, shapely aluminium fuel tanks, and I prefer that look to the original Montesa seat/tank design. The TY tank doesn't look quite right in a single colour, but with some clever design input, it could be re-painted to make the bike look very attractive

Thanks for the reply , looks like I'll be going the slightly modded route then

I'm sure there's gonna be some head scratching along the way but it'll keep me occupied

Now the last big question , it stops , starts runs quite well ( better than anticipated ) I payed £500 , is that over the odds taking into account it's already been messed with

Spending £500 on a complete twinshocker which runs pretty well sounds quite good. Even if you spent that much again on items like rear units, fork springs (front end looks a bit collapsed?), brake shoes, wheel bearings, fork seals and tyres to bring it up to scratch, an overall outlay of £1000 for a usable and competitive bike is still at the low end of price ranges these days.
