Beta 250 electrics help please

Hi all.

I've bought a 2008 Beta 250 as a non runner and need some help with the electrics please.

The bike has no spark at the moment and I'm trying to get to the bottom of it. I've downloaded the manual but the wiring diagram is blurred and I can't make out the wiring colours. Does anyone have a proper diagram? The wiring has been stripped out and from what I can see from the diagram I have found it is missing the lighting loom. All I have is the stator wiring, cdi, coil and fan power regulator. I've got everything plugged up to the cdi but the white and black cable and the yellow cable. Is the black and white one for the kill switch to ground and the yellow one to go to the power for the fan regulator?

I found a post on how to test the stator and I've done a few readings with the multimeter but I'm at work at the moment and don't have them to hand. From what I remember the coil primary was 0.8 ohms and the secondary was 9.250 on the 20k scale.

Any ideas?

Hi

Have a look at this thread, might have what you need.  If not give me shout, I have a 125, but the wiring I believe is same colours.

This thread mentions a six pole stator, this is no longer the case, it has been converted to a 4-pole.  I can knock up a diagram if you're struggling later on today.

Hello again,

Thanks for he replies. I've been doing 6 days a week so haven't had time to mess about with the bike. There have been a few developments on the background of the problem though.

I got in touch with the guy I bought the bike from and asked him about what happened leading up to the no start situation. He said that before the full on no start happened on a few occurrences the bike would cut out and not restart for a while or would just fire straight up. He said that he had other weird occurrences of say going over a stump and landing on the engine guard and the bike cutting out. He also mentioned that the very last time he took the bike out that the engine started to rev high so he took his wrist kill switch off and the bike continued to run. Reading that PDF you posted Dan I'm thinking the CDI could be dead from the years of being wired wrong?

I've found a second hand replacement CDI on Ebay for £45.  I've also just ordered a crimp set and tool, some black cable and I'm going to rewire the bike using the diagram with the new earth wiring in the pdf file.  Just to be sure about the stator and its health, I've been in contact with Steve @ uk-motoplat.com and he has said that the coil should be 450 ohms between the red and black cables. Mine is 306 ohms and have read a post from someone who tested theirs on a relatively new beta and had 321 ohms. Steve recommend that I get it sorted but just want to make sure it was out of spec before i do.

I don't have any lights to worry about so if I just plug the yellow wire from the stator to the regulator will that be fine?

Could I test the output of the stator to the regulator by bridging the thermo switch and kicking the bike over and looking for the fan to spin or does it need the engine to be running to get enough power for to turn the fan?

I'm sure there will be more questions....

Thanks

--------------EDIT-----------

Just found this in the 2010 - 2011 manual....

The stator winding must be inspected while the temperature of the component is approximately 20 °C. The inspection may also be performed with the generator coupled to the engine. Disconnect the 12-way black connector between the generator and CDI and with the use of a multimeter, verify that the resistances read between the terminals shown below fall within the prescribed range:

black-white (pick-up): 320 ohm ± 15%

red-blue (condenser): 300 ohm ±15 %

yellow-brown (services): 0.45 ohm ±20 %

The wires on mine are different colours. Can anyone translate those colours to the wires on mine?

Thanks

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Again.

Just checking in with an update, I got a new CDI from ebay and that solved the no spark problem. I also rewired the kill switch to the coil and everything works great. I went out on the bike today and all was well.

Thanks for all the help.
