Hi,

I'm looking for a couple of budget beginner friendly bikes, My son had a lesson on a TTR90 and loved it so in want to get him a bike sorted first. There's plenty of bikes for me but not knowing anything about trials bikes is there much out there for 10 year olds?

I did think about starting him on a PW or ttr90 semi auto but I think he's going to be limited to where he can ride it and I don't want him asking for a MX bike lol. TY80 is in budget but are they any others to consider? He's approx 4' 7"

Not looking into competition just father and son time on pay and play etc

I was in a similar situation and considered a crf50 / Pw80 but these bikes take your kids down the motocross / speed route. I stuck with a trials bike - low speed/ low impact etc. The Ty80 is a great bike, fits 7-10 yr olds and has a seat (kids get tired quickly). If you get a TY80 fit trials gearing to it - available from online TY parts specialist.   Also consider a Beta Rev 50 Medium Wheel - you should be able to buy a 2004 onwards for similar money (£400 / 500 ish) to a TY80. The rev50 is a physically bigger bike, but should from 10 yrs old up to about 12  yrs old. It is much more like a modern trials bike, with disc brakes and good suspension, bigger wheels and is easy to ride. I think the more recent version of this bike is now a Beta 80 med wheel, but this may be out of your budget.

Club Trials Competition is a great social outlet, and may help maintain the interest.

Cheers great info I'll add Rev 50 to list of bikes to look out for ?

I think the beta rev n go/ gas gas boy/ sherco semi auto 50s will be too small either now or very quickly.

Rev 50 was bigger and had 4 speed manual. Ty 80 were/are great but again will be too small before long.

Beta 80 is the most up to date, hydraulic clutch 6 speed modern suspension but small wheel ones are harder to find depending on budget, more of the big wheel but best to try for size first

Cheers for the replies

Modding the TY is definitely an option as I like my classic stuff and messing with bikes. I have seen a White Hawk version for sale which looks bigger would this be more suitable ?

Yes, my son actually rides a Beta 300 4T. When he was ten years old he was over 5 foot and growing fast. I made my own peg mounts and used tall ATV bars. We sold his bike and soon the new owner realized an adult could actually ride that TY 80. We now have around 10 guys riding the TY80 class just for fun.
