  3. 2012 12 09 -- Sad news: John Haberbosch the owner of Rocky Mountain Montesa has passed away after a motorcycle accident. I'm told by his cousin that a lady pulled out in front of him and he broadsided her car. Although he survived the accident he later passed due to complications. His cousin is answering John's business line. There is a celebration of life service this Saturday but I don't know where. Y'all be careful out there. :'(
  4. Hi Trials riders! The 2013 AHRMA season starts in AONIA GA and the course is set! Six new sections. One re-done and one old section. Some of the old sections are still up for practice Friday. So bring your friends and come to AONIA GA! All four lines available on each section from Beginner to Expert. So come out and play in the woods -- you know you want to! Also renewing the call for checkers for Saturday AM. We need checkers. Thanks to Steve Glinski, Gene Brown, Curt Elliot, Steve Maxton and Brian Chelchowsk who came out and helped get the course up. 6. Well it was a glorious weekend. 25 riders showed to ride 3 loops of eight sections including 3 beginners. My pictures are terrible but I will try to get links to the guy who was taking all the good pics. John Rodi on his Grandfathers (AL Rodi bought new) 1961 Matchless 500cc single. Here is John bouncing the frame off a root on his way into a gully on section 2. Checker Steve Maxon about to give one of the Modern Classic Intermediate riders a point for a dab. Graham Foster's lovely Ariel. Terrible picture of Graham. Picture of my 1972 Montesa Cota... We were blessed to have experts Mike Parsley, Graham Foster, James Smith and Gene Brown to show us not only how it is done but that it could be done. My thanks goes to Mike and Donna Collier - especially Donna. She kept me pointed in the right direction when I wasn't on the bike.

  8. The new stay up black floats makes things easier to adjust but the problem is the float bowl gasket. Get a new one or trim the old one with an exacto knife. Usually where they hang up around the pivot pin. Some material presses in and interferes with movement of the float. Sometime some flashing of the float bowl on the edge of the bowl or along the seem of the float itself can hang up on the side around the pivot pin. I use a fingernail file to take the flashing off. Could be any one of those three things. Usually not to hard to figure out. When reassembling this carb - be extremely careful not to over tighten any of the four screws - the two float bowl screws and the two top cap screws too tight. Usually what I do is tighten them down till the lock washer is flush with the above an below surfaces and then I turn the screwdriver one tiny smidge more and STOP. The same goes for the two nuts that hold the carb flange to the motor. Tighten down the nut until the lock washer is just crushed flat and then one tiny smidge more and stop. If the sealing o-ring is old hard dry and flat then replace it. I think the torque value on these nuts is 4 inch-pounds. That is ridiculously light. If you get ham fisted with any of the nuts you will (in order) 1) warp the float bowl 2) warp the carb body so that the slide sticks (usually wide @ssed open) 3) warp the carb flange (creates air leaks) If the carb has any age on it consider replacing the needle and needle jet as these are likly worn wide which will cause the bike to run really rich. Southwest Montesa has these bits. Good luck.
  9. HI Guys. Todays dumb question is timing. I have learned to set 21 BTDC with a spark plug dial gage. I was wondering if anybody has ever bothered trying something less in the 10 to 20 degree range. My reasoning is that I spend a lot of time riding in the idle to 2500 rpm range and 21 degrees is a compromise between fast runing and slow running motors. I am always trying to run slow as possible with little or no clutch so why not run the timing a little closer to TDC? 10 degrees? 15 degrees? Am I barking up the wrong tree?
  10. Thanks. I've got 5 wt in there now and it feel bit squishy.
  11. Hi Guys, The manual calls for 20wt or 30wt. How does this translate to today's modern oils? Is it 20wt for cold and 30wt for warm weather? Thanks in advance, SG
  12. What a weekend for riding in the woods. 3 loops of 8 sections. A couple of creek runs. Great fun. Picked up some instruction from 1 line Rider Steve Galinski. Ended up doing about 5 loops (two loops after the competition). A dad and an 7 year old son showed up on Moderns and rode with us! We even had some spectators! Great fun -- bike covered in red Georgia Clay. Yee Haw! No pictures as my camera failed. Time to service the Montesa...
  13. HI Guys/Gals, There is a vintage trials at Aonia Pass MX Park, Aonia GA and other vintage events as well. Links are here: http://www.atlantamc.com/ It's next weekend November 4th 5th and 6th. The trials is ONLY on SATURDAY with sign up starting at 9am and competition starting at 10am. This is an AHRMA vintage trials with AHRMA classes. Bill
  14. Well thanks guys for the reply. Things done: New needle and needle jet for the AMAL from Jared at Southwest Montesa. Switching to Motul Synthetic at 50:1. Hey it doesn't smoke anymore! Got a Montesa 247 Silencer from Sammy Miller. Hey I can hear myself think now! Got some weld on footpads from B & J products in Tennessee so now I can stand. Also got a Domino long throw throttle and cable and some pro taper bars also from B & J. I have practiced for two days now and WALLA the NGK B6HS is a nice medium tan with the clip on the needle in the middle position (I had it in the top slot before). I've got more low end power and it is more fun to ride with no sign of fouling! It doesn't bog down now when I go up a long set of stairs. I'm still waiting on shocks and a new red rear fender to replace the abortion that is on there now. So the bike is ready again and I'm off to Aonia GA for the Nov 5th Atlanta Motorcycle Club/ AHRMA regional trials. Thanks again guys!
