  1. Well, I have had confirmation from Steve at UK Motoplat that the arrow does indicate the direction of flywheel travel. So I'm now looking at a reworked stator for 135 pounds with postage. I've seen that the same stator was used on a 1982 KTM250. They were probably used on several european bikes around the early eighties. Meanwhile I've changed the original flat head screwdriver type M6 bolts on the clutch cover for cap heads with allan key holes - much easier to tighten up. Can't wait to kick this baby over.....

    304 !?!

Noice, final pics? How does she go?
  3. Yes it is a Motoplat electronic system. One thing I've noticed is that there is an arrow on the stator pointing clockwise. I think this is to indicate the direction of the flywheel rotation. As it is mounted on the left side of the bike, my magneto flywheel travels anti-clockwise. Can anyone please confirm this? I have the piece which bolts on behind the steering head and connects to the spark plug, can't tell if it is OK or not till I get the stator sorted. Any information would be much appreciated. The bike is a Cota 242, M39 engine.
  4. Hello again, I have sorted out the above gearbox issue, by moving shims and turning the first gear on the drive shaft around (the right way?) so that it doesn't engage in neutral. Now having a no spark situation to deal with. The stator, magneto and capacitor were off the bike when it arrived. I've set it up right from what I can tell. Is there a simple way to determine the optimum position of the stator? I've attached it using the old screw marks on the slotted holes as a guide. Have been reading on another forum that the motoplat system has a weak spark as there is no coil to boost it. So it relies on the speed of the magneto to create sufficient voltage in the stator for discharge from the capacitor. Next step will be to thoroughly check every inch of wiring for breaks. Has any one tried adding a coil to the set up, or once they are running is it not a problem?
  5. Thanks for the info so far. I've recently acquired a 242 as an unfinished project. After finding and building parts I am finally at the point where I can try to start her. I can't get neutral though. Seems like this may be a common problem from what I've read. It doesn't feel like it is changing gears at all. So tossing up between trying to kick it over with the clutch in, or trying to roll start it, or pulling the whole thing apart to see what is going on. Any advice would be well appreciated. Meanwhile, procrastinating...... procrastinating.....
