  1. BP, You are correct. UK legislation at the time prevented the importation of bikes with plastic or purely fibreglass tanks. The 348's that were shipped within the EU (not UK) and USA/Worldwide had a conformal one piece fibreglass tank. The UK legislation at the time meant UK imports had the alum tank with a glass cover. In some ways, it may be better, because the current high levels of ethanol in unleaded petrol can cause issues with older plastic and F/glass tanks, as the vapour leaches through the porosity of the material and degrades it quite rapidly (That's why most modern tank stickers on plastic tanks have a hole punched effect - it allows the gas to vent and stops the stickers peeling off the tank). Unfortunately, I have 2 all glass tanks that need to be sealed, but they will need to vent for at least a couple of weeks before I can treat them. I'll let you know how it goes? That said, 30 yr old alloy may have the same sort of porosity? There must be plenty out there who have faced the same issue? Regards RMM
  2. Belldane, Interesting comments? Montesa has a very proud history and anybody that own's one will be well aware of that. For the record, I have seven! Bad planning on my part! Unfortunately, time moves on. The supply of old Mont parts is limited. Keeping the marque alive by improving the reliability and encouraging people to buy old Mont's because there is a source of reliable replacement parts available must be a given? Sweeping statements that any of us should "get out of twin shock" just because it doesn't fit with your view on bare essentials are inflamatory in the least? Stereotypical views are best kept down under - they can be so counter productive. Live and let should be the watch word? Kind regards RMM
  3. Woody, Thanks for the reply. As the person who initiated this ignition development with Electrex, I was a little concerned to find that there were issues with this system. I was loosely involved with the initial development and tested the initial design on my Mont 348, although only functional checks were carried out. I recieved my pre-prod ignition mid last year but for various reasons never got round to fitting the system until late Dec - usual thing, overtaken by events! However, when I did, I noticed that the ign backplate can foul the crankcase oil seal holder, depending on whether the original retaining bolts and locking plate are fitted, and this can stop the ign backplate seating properly. The original ign plate is scallopped to avoid this. I worked round it by placing a small washer between the backplate and each locating lug, which then seats the back plate squarely and the bike runs fine. That said, I spoke to Electrex at Telford on Saturday. They were aware of the issue and they have redesigned the backplate to resolve this. Ironically, the engine I gave them to develop this did not have the problem! Spanish quality control of the 70's? Anyway, they are also sending me a replacement backplate, free of charge, so can you pass this on those that had issues, so they can contact Electrex direct.   5. BP, My Mont, as bought off e-bay and when when finished, loads of lessons learnt, loads of friends made around the world sourcing bits and loads of heartache trying to sort out the obvious. It's done nearly 2 seasons since the pics were taken but still keeps going - it has been mod'ed but most are not obvious (ie: Electronic Ign developed with Electrex). Now have to sort out the other 6 monts, Have loads of info and advice if you need? Cheers, RMM
  6. Hi BPilgim, I've just seen this thread. I must admit that I was a bit of an originality jedi where my first 348 was concerned, but eventualy I had to ride it. I must post some pics. You have decide if you want 100% originality and, given the cost of NOS spares means, that if you can find them, you won't want to use the bike or do you build a bike you can have great fun on in twin shock trials and tweak a bit with sudo modern bits but does not detract too much from the original design? It's always a trade off? They were a great bike in their time and are still very comp in twin shock if set up correctly. RE: Your wheels - I agree with the general consensus that if the rims have been fire damaged then it is unlikely, without considerable expense, that they could be safely used in any form of competition - might be OK for a museum piece. However, if you're still looking for a set of 348 wheels, I have a couple of sets of used 348 front/rear wheels, original Akronts, etc that I would be willing to exchange for your MH349 wheels (one for one of course)?   7. Jaan, I fitted a decomp to my 348 some time ago, which I got from In-Motion (Dave Renham). It comes as a kit; with valve, cable and lever - it's easy to fit and I have had no problems with it. It can make starting easier - helps to get the piston over TDC, but it is a 'godsend' on long steep downhills, when wet brakes create wet pants! I believe it was about

Jaan, I've been in the same boat for a while, outside of Spain there is comparibly little support for the older Montesa, and I've found nothing Electronic Ignition wise, so I spoke to one of the UK Manufacturers a few months ago and their problem was they had no engine to use as a 'mule' to develop one. So, I loaned them one of mine in March, to hopefully develop a system, although it may take a while - they were very busy at the time, and priorities, etc. However, I will keep you all informed as to when the ideal hopefully comes to fruition, as it may remove one of the variables with the old Cota's occasional asma. Until then, stick to the basics, clean and well adjusted points, with a condenser that hasn't been there for 20 yrs or even 2! Then set the timing accurately. So long as there are good earths on the relevant frame points, the ignition side should not be a problem. Mine starts fisrt kick always. It's really the Carb that can be its Achilles Heel! Anyway, this is my first post after many months, nee, nearly years of 'observing' - never had anything to say really but felt this might ease your plight, so the 'City Fathers' may well contradict me, but that's my thoughts, for what it is worth!
