  1. Alan puts on a great show that I always enjoy. I didn't get this year due family probs and am suffering withdrawal symptoms!! If he didn't run it one year there would be an outcry. Its as essential as the Scottish pre 65, and may it long continue. All thanks to Alan, and I look forward to next year!!
  2. Alan Whitton is a man who converts 3TA forks, fitting modern internals. He may be able to offer you some help/advice. His tel is 01246419805, and be aware he is a busy man!! jt
  3. You could do no better than talk to Jim Pickering, mentioned already in a reply above, his tel is 07850 836571. He will be at Wrighty's show in Telford in a couple of weeks if you can get to it. I'm in the process of building up a Bantam courtesy of Jim P who provided me with most of the bits and I can highly recommend him as a real good lad, provides good gear and is very helpful.
  4. Hi Ken, go to www.armac-design.com the website of Duncan Macdonald where you will find all sorts of Cub goodies. My guess is that you might get the info you need from him. Good luck, jt.
  5. Hi Guys, and thanks for all your input which is much appreciated. It is completely weird. The carb is new from Amal, so the needle should be OK. Similarly the filter is new, and should not be a problem. The float is the latest adjustable from Amal which allows the float level to be altered with out having to move the float needle seat. I've had to drop the float to give a lower fuel level to weaken the mixture off. At present the float is about 2mms below the Amal reccommended position. Any higher and it just runs rich all the way throughout, 4 strokes and pushes a lot, and I mean a lot, of oil out the exhaust. I've tried changing all jets except the needle jet, which is a 106. I shall try a 105 as a last resort before putting someone else's carb on, which I guess is now the only way to go. Thanks again for all your input. jt
  6. Hi Monty, thanks for the input. Though I don't suppose my prob is exactly the same as yours it will be something similar, the job is to find it!!
  7. Hi CVGM, that did not occur to me. Problem is that Amal provide only one 2 stroke needle, a 4 stroke needle, a special 4 stroke needle, and an alcohol needle. I most certainly have the 2 stroke needle, however I will talk to the Amal tech people in relation to you suggestion and see what they say. Thank you very much for your input, much appreciated. Regards jt.
  8. Looking to pick the brains of 2 stroke guru's. Have a Villiers 250 fitted with a Marcel barrel (trials) and am having carb problems. The engine seems to run rich, and to get a 'normal' plug reading, and no oil in the exhaust, it needs a 100/110 main jet. With that fitted, the needle in the top ring, and a No4 slide fitted the engine runs ok at all settings above 1/8th open, ie just a little rich looking at the plug (GKN BP5ES) and 2 stroking as it should. Now the difficult bit! With a 25 idle jet I can get it to tick-over, but at low throttle openings, ie less than1'8th, the engine 4 strokes. If I open out the air screw to where it will 2 stroke, it will not tick over, except at a very high and a little erratic rpm. Trying to get an acceptable low rpm and a 2 stroking engine so far seems impossible. I've tried dropping the pilot jet down to, 22 then 20, even 15 without being able to get it to run right. Running it with the tick-over setting and at low revs with 4 stroking the plug is wet as you would expect. Running at low revs with 2 stroking the plug looks dry but a bit black. But can I get it to tick-over and 2 stroke at low revs, can I heck. I've even tried using a hotter plug BP4ES, but with out success, and it is difficult to start as you would expect. The carb sits vertical on the engine, and the float level has been dropped from the Amal reccommendation in order to get a leaner running engine and reduce the richness. So does anyone have any suggestions?? All will be welcome, and be aware I've got so jets and slides I could open a shop, so give me a setting and I'll be able to set it up. Many combinations of jets, slides and needle positions I have tried without success. Oh, and it is a 2 stroke carb with a 2 stroke needle, confirmed by Amal who supplied it. Yes it is new!
  9. Further to this thread, which I started some months ago, I am now in the middle of a James build. Woody was a wee bit off with his estimates on prices. An iron barrel engine will be 1200 to 1400 and if you want square barrel you can add another 350 to that. Even if you don't use billet hubs and brake plates, by the time you've widened the rear hub used new rims and stainless spokes, then the powder coating, building and new tyres and bearigs etc the cost of the set of wheels will be getting up to the 1000 that Woody estimated. A bike is not cheap to build but it is a very satisfying excercise and solving the little engineering problems is quite interesting too. Have to say that I've been getting much help from the two Alan's, John Bull, and Dave Stewart, so many thanks to them. Will post some pics when it's finished, which will not be 'till well after the Manx event. And good luck to all who have entered, enjoy!!
  10. If you Google 'pre 65 trials Scottish' you will find a pdf file from Edinburgh & District Motor Club Ltd Pre 65 Scottish 2 Day Trial, which gives guidance on eligiblilty of machines for that event. The significant issue I think is the use of later forks and carbs which doesn't seem to be a problem for many clubs south of the border down Yorkshire way!! The Yorkshire Classic club do appear to have a very realistic approach, which they are to be commended for, as it makes the riding of some bikes all the more enjoyable if they can be recarbed. Long may they continue.
  11. Hi Peter, I cannot help you myself but if you go to www.rockshocks.co.uk the site of John Bull you will find pics of Dots which he makes. His e-mail address is on site and he may be able to help you, or point you in the direction of someone who can. Or you could try villiersservices.co.uk who make up villiers engines. Their e-mail address is on the site. Or google 'nametab engineering' and talk to simon. Hope this helps.
  12. Hi Tim, many thanks for the code etc. Now about your bike. My first trails bike is what you have there and I rode it for about a year then changed it for a DOT. You've made a terrific job of the rebuild and I tell you that if you ever consider selling it you may be able to pursuade me!! Sentimental old clod that I am. Thanks again. jt.
  13. Hi all you James addicts out there. Any one got a colour code for James red??? Thanks in anticipation..
  14. Hi Paul, Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. Have a good week-end. Cheers jt.
