It alway amazes me that when you see a collection of ‘superbikes’ parked up, the riders when they take their helmets off are ??? really quite old and probably drawing a pension or two. I have to include myself in the ‘quite old’ area but lucky enough to pass as younger so my other half says....bit too risky to argue! A bike dealer friend nodded in the direction of a Ducati 748 just pulling into the parking area of his dealership. Wait until he takes his helmet off my friend said. Man on Ducati stops, side stand gingerly down and he slides off bike standing all hunched the way you tend to in race leathers. This riders were yellow to match the bike (possibly even the colour of his skin). Well when he removed his helmet? I took a sharpe intake of breath?, 85 said my friend. In a minute his wife will be along to pick him up (not in the literal sense....he was standing up ok). Sure enough a little old lady arrives driving a Nissan Micra! His bike was in for service, can’t say he looked fit and healthy as he was still hunched up a bit with his leathers partly down. Riding bikes, any sort, must be good for you????

Although my main interest is trialling, I'm a bit involved in classic road racing.

My wife runs Spencer Racing, running bikes mostly with the CRMC.

Over the last few years our 1967 Suzuki 200 racer has won the CRMC Classic Ultralightweight Championship 8 times.

This season we'll be putting around 15 bikes out on track, mainly in the Junior Production class with Yamaha 600's.

We're fielding a couple of bikes in the Aircooled 500 class too, both with the CRMC and BHR.

Also running a couple of Honda 125 racers with a new class with BHR.

BYRNE AVENGES FIRST RACE DISAPPOINTMENT WITH VICTORY NEXT TIME OUT

Shane Byrne made amends for the bitter disappointment of a machine problem ruling him out of the opening race of the third round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship while leading as he comfortably took the victory next time out.

That victory, his second of the campaign, ensured that the HM Plant Honda rider left the North Yorkshire circuit as the series leader, albeit by only three points over the former MotoGP rider John Hopkins who took second and third placings on his Suzuki.

The opening race was delayed by rain, but the weather changed and the race was declared dry, leaving the riders with something of a dilemma about tyre choice. Byrne, who had scorched to pole start opted to begin the race on full slicks, but his team-mate, three times champion Ryuichi Kiyonari, taking note of the storm clouds expected more rain and made a more cautious selection.

Kiyonari, who had a difficult time in qualifying with machine settings, started from the fourth row of the grid, but was soon losing ground as the expected rains failed to materialise while out front Byrne was heading the action, only to slow a little as a few spots of rain fell.

Byrne was almost three seconds clear when disaster struck him on the eighth lap on the start-finish straight, with tell tale smoke pouring from his bike. His race was run, and he pulled off with the Safety Car brought out as officials checked for any oil spill. That bunched the pack, and Hopkins, who had been second to Byrne, led the action, only to be taken by his team-mate Jon Kirkham at two thirds distance en route to his maiden victory in the series.

Kiyonari dejectedly finished back in 25th position and for the second race that meant a seventh row start, while Byrne was on the front row and making good use of that as he quickly reeled in opening lap leader Gary Mason riding Kawasaki. Once ahead, Byrne dictated terms, leading throughout to take his second victory of the campaign and regain the lead in the title stakes from Hopkins who had gone ahead after the first race.

Reigning champion Kiyonari was full of fight in the race, riding with the style and speed that has taken him to 42 race victories and three titles in the series, and he was moving through the pack in a damage limitation exercise that took him to an eventual 15th place, and a consolation championship point.

Alex Lowes maintained his domination of the "back to basics" BSB-EVO class with a winning double aboard the WFR Honda, excelling in the opening race as he finished fifth overall, and then taking eleventh next time out. His team-mate, former Supersport and Superstock champion Glen Richards ran second to him in class in each race.

Honda rider quotes:

Shane Byrne (HM Plant Honda): "The first race was obviously disappointing for me and the team as I desperately wanted to win and do a good job for our sponsors HM Plant at their home round. In the first race it was a gamble on tyres and we opted for slicks, but it was the right choice and we were able to build up a lead. We were unlucky to have a mechanical failure whilst leading as we have done so many miles on the bikes and it was just a shame it happened in the race. The team then worked hard between the races to get me ready for race two and I had a bit of a strategy to just see how the race unfolded. We tried hard, settled down and then I just pushed to edge the gap and then tried to keep it consistent and control the lead. It was disappointment to elation for me in one day but we were able to end the day on a high and it was a great victory for myself and the team."

Ryuichi Kiyonari (HM Plant Honda): "It has been a difficult weekend for me and I have been trying many different changes but we still were running the same lap times, but we have worked hard to try and fix the problem. In the first race it was a decision on tyres and we thought it would rain more, so we went for wets but that was the wrong choice and I just couldn't push. In the second race I had to start so far down the grid because of race one and then it was hard work but we still made passes and moved forward. It is disappointing for me and the team."

Alex Lowes (WFR Honda): "This has been a mega day for me, one that I have really enjoyed. I didn't realise I was as high up in the first race as I was. It was good to be running up front. The bike was really good as is the team. Then in the second race, again I had a really good pace and took another victory in the EVO class. And with Glen (Richards) my team-mate second in each of the races it has been a brilliant day for the team."

Jonathan Rea from the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team went all out for wins at his home race meeting and recorded two second place finishes which improved his points score in the championship and made his overall third place a little more secure.

Starting from second place in each 18-lap race at this long 5.902km circuit, Rea led for the majority of each race, his only company the eventual winner of each leg, Cal Crutchlow.

At the top of the championship Max Biaggi now leads race one podium finisher Leon Haslam by 373 points to 313, with Rea on 243, 39 points ahead of Carlos Checa with three rounds and six races remaining.

Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider Max Neukirchner went 11th in race one, his best result since the Assen race weekend in April, but a technical problem saw him drop out of race two. Having qualified 18th Max and his team found an improvement for raceday and he was riding well inside the points in race two before he was forced out.

ECHO CRS Honda rider Broc Parkes had a very difficult raceday after making it into Superpole and starting 19th on the grid. A collision with another rider saw him fall on the first lap of race one, and then another fall put him out on lap eight of race two. He stays 20th overall, two places behind Neukirchner.

The HM Pant Honda duo of Ryuichi Kiyonari and Josh Brookes had a tough time in their WSBK wildcard weekend, with Brookes 16th in race one and 12th in race two, Kiyonari 21st in the opener and 16th in race two. They had qualified 17th and 22nd respectively.

Laverty fends off Sofuoglu in thrilling Silverstone race

Pole winner Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda) led in impressive form in what was a delayed 16-lap Supersport World Championship race. He would eventually repel the attack put in by championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) and in the overall points standings Sofuoglu now has 203, Laverty 186.

This was Laverty

Spanish World Superbike at Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo Sunday April 11 2010 World Superbike and World Supersport race report Round Three

Weather: Dry

Temperature: 20 to 25 ambient, 29 to 46 track

REA TOP FIVE AGAIN AFTER TWO SOLID FINISHES

Championship leader Leon Haslam (Suzuki) and Noriyuki Haga (Ducati) took the wins at the third round of the Superbike World Championship but two gritty rides from Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda CBR1000RR) put the Northern Ireland rider fifth in the points.

Jonathan went sixth in race one, fighting a lack of front-end grip on the notoriously fickle Valencia tarmac. The next best Honda finisher, Max Neukirchner (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda CBR1000RR), was 13th. Both riders improved on their qualifying performances, with Rea seventh in Superpole on Saturday and Max 16th.

Race two only lasted for three laps before a crash involving two riders on the main straight stopped the contest, leading to a second leg over 20-laps and an aggregate final result. Rea had been second in the first race and restarted from that place on the grid.

Vittorio Iannuzzo (Squadra Corse Italia Garvie Image CBR1000RR) was involved in the crash that stopped the first running of race two, and hurt his right hand and ribs in the crash, ruling him out of the restart. He also crashed at post 2 on lap 13 of race one, losing the chance of scoring points today.

It was a hard day for another Honda rider, as Sheridan Morais (ECHO CRS Honda CBR1000RR) did not start the races, having had a painful crash in warm-up this morning to add to his big fall in Superpole 1 on Saturday. He was declared unfit by medical staff after hitting his head on the tarmac, but he did not suffer any serious injury.

Sheridan had been 20th in qualifying, the last rider to make it into Superpole.

Sofuoglu Second In Race and Championship At Valencia

In finishing second behind race winner Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki) today front row qualifier Kenan Sofuoglu (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda

CBR600RR) has put himself second in the championship, after 23-laps of changing fortunes for the leading riders at Valencia.

There have now been three different race winners this year, but for Phillip Island race winner Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda CBR600RR) there was to be no chance to turn his pole position here into a win on raceday. Laverty was fifth, not having made the best tyre choice and slowly dropping off the pace after leading the race for the first five laps.
