  1. I currently have a 14 plate Berlingo car which is great for transporting a single bike, the rear seats can unclip and can be taken out.

    I am considering buying a new Berlingo or Rifter car but notice in the new models the rear seats fold flat and there appears to be less less height available. Just wondering if anyone has a new shape vehicle and if can get a bike in easily.

  2.

    Thanks everyone for your comments, very helpful.

    I had based wheelbase measurements on Sherpa sales brochures. According to the brochures all Sherpas have the same 1315mm (51.7”) wheelbase except for model 158, 1290mm (50.7”) and Model 80/91/92 at 1330mm (52.3”) not sure though if this refers to the early 91/92 which I would assume would be the same frame as model 80 or the late frame which I would have assumed was the same as the 124/125.

    My wheelbase measurement was taken from centre of rear wheel adjustment, with the wheel foremost on the adjusters it is 1330mm, so it would seem all is okay as it is and line with early Slimlines, perhaps with the Alpina clamps it would bring it more in line with later Sherpas.

    That is a good spot on the yokes being Montesa I did not know what they were from, I seem to recall they had an aluminium dome stem nut which I have managed to lose over time, this has caused me some grief as the stem has a very fine thread, 1mm pitch. I had found some listed on the well-known auction site but when it arrived it was not the size listed; I think I have found one now though.

    Thanks again.

  3. I guess everyone has their own lockdown projects on the go at the moment. Mine is using up accumulated parts to put a Sherpa together using a late engine in a slimline (91B) frame. I am quite keen to get the bike relatively finished so that I can move onto other things, so far so good except I had some 35mm triple clamps that I thought would be suitable as they had quite a bit of offset but it would seem they have too much. As it stands with the rear shocks measured at 355mm (temporary fitment only to hold the bike together) the wheelbase measures 1335mm (52.5”). Standard is 1315mm (51.7”) on 340mm shocks I believe. Not sure I will be able to get this back by dropping the forks so wondered if anyone happens to have a spare set of aluminium yokes they would care to sell? I do have a set of Alpina yokes, these have no offset and not sure if they would work.

  4. I think that's a bit unfair, okay whatever generation you are it is never easy to justify throwing away money on a luxury item but Chris does make some good points. I am in the older demographic and welll exposed to mechanical shenanigans when i was young, times have changed. I would be doing stuff like bleeding car brakes and changing plugs at primary school age. That seldom happens now, if you are not exposed to mechanical items you are not likely to develop an interest.

    During the lockdown i have actually been wondering if i really want to continue competing, progress for me is really slow. Having said that i am buiding a Bultaco right now, i may do as Chris indicated and ride twinshock, i may carry on riding my modern or i may just give up completely. Time will tell.

  5. I am not on Facebook and have no intention of joining. I know of several people that have left in recent months. I do actually find it frustrating that many clubs choose to update in Facebook and not update their websites. I come on here intermittently and it is an excellent resource. Having ridden badly for a number of years i am not really in a position to comment on techniques and such like but do take in comments more knowledgable members make. I do like to work on my bikes though and the depth of knowedge has been invaluable. (Woody i am especially looking at you).

  6. Funnily enough started making myself an alloy tank to fit inside kit campeon cover this afternoon. Never made a tank before. So far so good, though it has caused me a few headaches drawing it.

  7. I have been looking at this for a while as i have been considering building a track bike with a 370 motor i have in pieces. Still trying to decide whether to commit though. I had come to the same conclusion regarding the rear hub and losing the kickstart but the sprocket would still be very close to the ignition rotor cover. I notice AJR in Spain have larger front sprockets for the TSS. Would you know if these have the same 25mm splines?

  8. Ahh yes found it, looks like all the difficult to get parts are all there.I am not sure that there was a massive difference between any of the 5 speeds in terms of performance or reliabilty. I am sure somebody here would be better qualified to judge. The motors are all in a low state of tune so differences are marginal. Whatever you buy it will cost you more than you anticipate to bring upto scratch! Or at least thats my experience.

  9. Lee, there are a couple of Alpinas on ebay at the moment neither of which are 350. The one in Ireland is listed as a 166 but it deffinately is not, much earlier frame, might even be a Sherpa, and is also 250. The 137 looks nice but unless it has had an engine change should be a 250. I have a part built 137 and an almost finished 188 (77). The 137 frame is very light, my only concern would be the fibreglass tank and most likely if the bike has stoop for any length of time it will need new main bearings. Not especially difficult to do but no doubt the parts list will accumulate as you pull it apart. Another thing to be wary of are the brake drums, the drums faces are chrome plated aluminium and eventually the chrome wears through resulting in having to strip the wheels and have someone fit new iron liners which adds a lot of cost.

  10. This is the BMW part number for the float i just purchased. BMW M/Cycle BING Carburetor FLOAT 1311125476

    seems to be the same part as you have listed, the carb i used it on was a Bing 84 (number should be stamped on the carb body) and fitted 350 Bultaco Alpina, i cant remember if it was 26 or 28mm.

  11. Just bought a float listed for BMW myself.The seller was on ebay but looks as though mine was the last one as they are no longer listing it. Looks the same as you have shown and fits fine in Bultaco Bing 84 or whatever it is. From memory the Bing part number is 300 or 301.

  12. I guess it will depend on how carried away you want to get with the headlight bulb. The site above has dipping bulbs rated at 250mA, low beam and 500mA, high beam at 12V. For the brake light boards i have seen them rated at 80mA for brake light and 60mA for tail light numberplate light. You can get very bright, higher rated dipping bulbs which seem to be around 1600mA high beam. My guess is that with the  lights on riding on high beam using the lower rated headlight bulb i would get around 2hrs using the 1800mAh battery and 45 minutes or so if you used the very bright bulb on high beam. Higher rated batteries are available for a few pounds more. Having said that the battery i have is so small, light and cheap you could carry a spare in your pocket.

    Another couple of suppliers here;

    Just like to mention i have not actually installed any of this yet so cannot vouch for how successful it would be but i am looking to use a KTM type bar switch which is quite a nice solution, as it has all the controls in a single switch. Apico make an alternative, this is what i am intending to use and i made a quick sketch based on this. Not yet having a switch to test i cannot confirm wire colours are definitely correct though.

  13. I have been looking into this recently for an Alpina that i am putting together, i believe the standard headlight is a CAV item, 130mm.

    I am looking at fitting a cheap repro' Honda CG 125 unit, retailing from £15 like this; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Replica-HONDA-CB100-CB125-CG125-Headlight-Headlamp-Complete/401547914069?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

    As i do not intend to ride in the dark i am looking at fitting total loss electrics with a 12V Li-ion CCTV battery, LED bulbs, DC horn.

    A nice small rear brake/tail/ number plate light board available here;

    This is the tiny battery i have https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Li-ion-Battery-Pack-for-CCTV-Camera-Mini-Portable-DC-168-12V-Rechargeable-Pretty/301408597336?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
