  1. Float was my first thought but the seals are getting replaced first. I am going to try things one at a time and the try the bike between each step, then I'll know what the answer is..... I am off to have a meaningful discussion with the flywheel, see if we can reach an agreement about it coming off the shaft !
  2. Yup, have done the ignition side seals, only took 30 minutes..... Had a battle with the clutch pins until I realised that by turning the clutch basket so that the pin I wanted out was at BDC, push the spring and hey presto, they fell out. Other than having 3 hands or the special tool, what is the best way to get them back in again ? I have to go out and get a puller tomorrow, the flywheel won't move :-( ibhbul, bondy, will work on the carb once the crank seals are done.
  3. I have just completed a cosmetic resto of a 76, 350 Sherpa which has been stood for 20+ years. Mechanically it sounds OK. Now that I have fired her up, I have 2 issues: There is a significant change in engine speed with no corresponding throttle movement. The motor will rev and then slow almost to a stall. with no throttle input. It also seems to take a long time to spool down when revved. Secondly there is a large "flat spot " on the first 1/8 throttle or so. I have just replaced plug, points and condenser and thoroughly cleaned the Bing 84 carb out to get her fired up. The air screw is at 1.1/2 turns out. Something else which is odd, If I lean the bike over to the left or right, the engine speeds up I have new crank seals but have not yet put them in, pure laziness I guess ! Any suggestions gratefully accepted.
  4. Thanks for the input. I have found a vapour blaster close to home and will take it there. The photo above is exactly what I am aiming for. Was the head steady painted or plated when new?
  5. I am looking for a way to restore the cylinder head on my 183 Sherpa 350 to the original look I.e. light grey as it cane from the factory and keep it that colour with something like a clearcoat. Any suggestions ?
  6. This one appears original and talking to the previous owner, seem like it is. I thought that only the UK bikes had alloy tanks but could be wrong !
  7. Have "given it a go" with not much happening, gas down the plug hole and she fires intermittently. She has been stood for 30 years so a thorough going over is needed prior to getting down to a full restoration. At this stage I just want to hear the motor running, check that the gears shift before getting down to business. I spoke to Bing in KC and was quoted $250 for a carb rebuild, I can get a replacement OKO for less than that but the bike will not then be "stock" which is kind of what I am aiming for... course that might change ! Located West Coast Laird- agree with the kickstart rubber although in my younger days I did have a Bultaco kickstart through the back of my leg thanks to a backfire while trying to start it. I went to the pub before the hospital though.......
  8. Have just bought myself a project, a model 183, 350 Sherpa, not used for 30 years, a bit like me ! The bike doesn't look like it has been trialled, no dents / scrapes in the frame and has the original steel bars, alloy fenders (under the white paint), glassfibre tank and the wire clips / light mounts are still on the frame. It won't start but I am addressing the issue (hopefully). It seems to have been bought originally in Germany, then to the UK, to Africa and finally to Canada with the previous owner. I rode in the UK in the 70's and decided to get back into it having had Bultacos / Montesas etc in the past I thought twin shock might be the way to go as the way I ride, the clutch never gets used in a section ! So new condenser, plug, crank seals, points, intake rubber are on their way. There is a weak, intermittent spark currently. The gas tank needs ethanol proofing so that is on order. Anything else suggested as a first go around to get the motor running ? Also any suggestions for a carb rebuild (original Bing 84) full of crap and needing a good clean out!
