  1. But back to Rosshoss problem. The 9/44 does what you are lookinng for. 2nd gear is now your normal first. Its way faster than stock 1st was. Third is your new second and its exactly the same ratio as the stock second.

You would consider the first gear a granny low for only super tight work. Sure you will lose a little top speed. But luckily you prabaly rarely used up 6th gear.

     Good luck!

  2.  I know how it works. Used ro always ride in second and third alot more than I do now. When we went to the all day dab, the sections got even tighter. The bikes have gotten better and they all come with a really tall first gear. Which makes it very quick and fast  enough to get over most obstacles.

I think the NATC had some of the ride off film on the facebook page. Worth a look as it was crazy busy.

And it sure would be fun to ride with you someday to show us how. I bet you are crazy fun to ride with!@

  3. Thats just too funny to respond too. You should watch the ride off bettween Pat Smage and Tobi on the Montesa 301. That section was so hard I bet they both rode in first gear. And you are telling everyone to ride in third gear! LOL!!!!!!!

You should give the top riders lessons!

  4. That is spot on. 9/44 is the sweet spot. First is only used rarely. 2nd is used most of the time. Why this gearing makes sense is third is exactly the same as the stock second, which means 4th is just taller than the stock third. But you have to keep that thought in your head at all times. I had someone tell me this and I ignored it. Had been a Beta rider since 1990, always just used 2nd. Had a 2016 factory and the gearing drove me nuts. Got up at 3 a.m. one morning and computed the gear ratio`s.

Now I ride a 301 Montesa, I run a 9/38 That will confuse the hell out of the 4RT guys!!!

Being that you are in the USA and have obviously never seen the SSDT in its complete form you can be forgiven for thinking that riders do not sit down for quite long periods of time on their bikes during the Scottish while riding on the road in between sections , although it is a fact that they do and always have. There is a lot of footage of the SSDT on the internet showing riders doing just that  . We live and learn.

As you say DL 12  is over 6ft tall and I think uses no bar risers and as far as I know uses a 4 1/2" rise bar . He is a 'croucher '  on the bike with very strong legs like most serious trials riders have. He obviously is not hindered  by his taller than average for a trials riders height .

Come on if you are so knowledgeable about running diwn the road at the Scottish. Hieght, bars, awkwardness is the least any of the riders are worried about . Its all about the bike!@ Fuel, carburation, cooling and above all TIME@

  6. Actually I would not have thought riding on the road would lead you to be making bike changes. And I know plenty about the Scottish. We have had 3 women and 2 men ride it over the years  Besides Lewisport began there American adventure with my club. 52 years now I have been riding trials. The Scottish has always impressed me and the SCOTT has always been the opposite.

All this B.S. over a noob that does not like the trials stance. He should have spent a few hours on a real trials steed. Like

the ty250r 1984 model. The best bike ever, until it was not!

Not sure that its an advantage to be tall on a trials bike riding on the trail ,  overhanging tree branches will let the tall rider know that its not an advantage. If you  are an Enduro rider it is an advantage to be tall for example Pol Tarres  6ft 7" who bailed on Trials competition and went over to the tall seat bikes scene. I know who I would rather be riding the Scottish Six Day Trial with all that road work to do on a trials bike , short legs fold up smaller than gangly long legs when you are sat on a trials bike.

Yes, a trials bike is very uncomfortable when running long periods down roads. Thankfully you can stand back up to stretch at any given moment, An early pro model bike is not much different from current bikes as far as trail riding. Just do it more to build up stamina. Once you start riding events, you never think about standing all day as you are focused on riding. Now some of those long down hill sections can sure take a toll. We are  talking miles at a time. Zippy is right about the bars. I have been cutting mine down for 52 years now. That`s the first thing anybody notices when they get on my bike.

I have a 2009 Gas Gas Raga Replica 300 and it has this Sachs rear shock that is "non-rebuildable." I would like to replace it, but Trials bike parts are not always so easy to find in the USA. Trying to find a replacement shock has frightened me, as I want to buy a new one, but they are expensive and I do not want to buy the wrong new one. Am I over thinking this? Can I buy any shock for a Trials bike and slap it on the ole' Raga? Or do I have to ensure I find one with the exact length eye to eye, and exact diameter of "eyes" at each end specific to the 2009 Raga, and if that is the case where can i find that?

Not all are the same length, spring size, or mount size. Plus Gas Gas has gone bankrupt twice and changed owners 3 times since 2015.

  9.  It`s virtually impossible to learn trials correctly without some help from another rider that knows how t ride proper. By yourself you will devolop bad habits that will be hard to resolve. First and foremost is a proper turn on flat ground, then on a hill and then figure 8`s with multi off cambers. When and only when you are doing well you throw some ledges and then mix in some rollers. Splats and zaps will be the last things you need to learn as a roll up has to become automatic as 90% of anything you can ride will be easily conquered with this most basic move. Then the next step is the double blip which cause most people to just give up as there are too many things happening at once.

Again riding with trials riders and competing will speed your progress 10 fold vs by yourself.

  10. The proven setup is 9/44 Super low first. 2nd becomes the most used gear. And 3rd is almost identical to the stock 2nd gear. Being a 6 speed it does not lose much top speed.

  11.  All three of them handle oem parts. Fact is its faster to order from the uk and cheaper. The only part I would order from a Honda dealer would be the fenders for free shipping. I have done this for years. Best to use the part numbers from your manual.

Thanks, but they do not handle Factory OEM parts for the trials Cota 300 (although they seem to have parts OEM parts for every other model). Still looking for a place in America that keeps Origional Equipment Parts in stock.

Partszilla, trials super store or the best is the splatshop in the u.k.
