  1. Hi Dont know if its any help as i've never been across the sea to Ireland. But Halfords say they stock this addative at ALL their branches. Every one i've been in does but again thats in England. I assume Halfords do have branches in Ireland ? if not then stick with Big Johns idea. I've just started using it myself and no problems so far either. Good luck.
  2. Beta boy. Thanks for the photo. Verrrrrrrrrrrrry nice. Bit of a work of art. I'd be worried about getting them dirty even. Think i will stick with the Hebo ones theres too many rocks in these parts and they will get well bashed soon enough. If money were no object ................ but then again it always is isnt it?
  3. Thanks Beta Boy will give BVM a ring. What are the dogs danglies @
  4. Thanks for the advice BJ. Glad you concur with my feelings about the SM footrests. I have them on my OSSA Yellow gripper and they feel like on a knife edge compared to the ones on the Sherpa, and lets face it they are'nt exactly hi tech but they are broader and support the foot better. As i will be starting from scratch with the B40 i thought i had better fit the best i could find and had forgot the brand that i had seen previously discussed on the site. So Hebo or Sherco ? I've been out of touch with trials for about 18 yrs now so does anybody out there have any ideas where to get Hebo ones from? i assume that the sherco ones are available from a sherco dealer so will try the old search engine. Which are the best? personal preference i suppose but never having ridden a sherco, my last "modern" bike was a TY250R mono loved that bike especially after Mick Andrews had finished with it, i wouldnt have the foggiest idea. As you are fitting Hebo's i must assume they are the dogs danglies. Are they expensive? or do you think i should try the sherco ones first? If anybody has any other tips re B40 trials and especially Otter frames, spoke to Howard today should be here Monday (another couple of weeks then), i will be soooooooo grateful.
  5. Hi Vinnied. No i never had any tyre problems. Had a few concussion punctures, thats the problem with Derbyshire all bloody rocks apart from Teversal and thats in Notts, but never had the tyre come off. Remember seeing your post earlier and i must say i am at a loss as to why it keeps happening to you. My only suggestion is the rim you have may be at fault. The next time the tyre comes off, hopefully because you are taking it off, just measure 1. The overall diameter from rim edge to rim edge then 2. the actual depth of rim that you have. Then compare this to a new one. I know it sounds daft but its not impossible that the rim you have may be undersize slightly. One last thing what WM size is your rim? I know christy likes the idea of a wide rim but if the rim is wider then the tyre may be more liable to come off the bead. Myself i dont build my bikes for looks. The ONLY reason for any part of the bike is that it is the best for function not fashion. then again i am getting on a bit. Honestly this is true i once bought a bike, 242 Montesa, and the previous owner had filed the rim edge to make it easier to get the tyre on. Back in those days the tyres were made of bakalite. Only joking but they were damn stiff and it wasnt impossible to put a flat in the rim just putting them on. Needless to say the rim was scrap but it just goes to prove "there's nowt so funny as folk"
  6. Hi I am sure this has been covered before but do any of you have any ideas where i can get some footrests c/w mounting plates for welding on or bolt on to an Otter frame kit for a B40 i will (hopefully) be receiving soon?? I seem to remember some chat recently about using some off a current trials bike but i cant remember which one or where they are obtainable from. How much would be nice too. I've looked at the Miller ones and Surrey Cycles and to be honest No too narrow. Would like a bigger area underfoot. If not i may just get some old Bultaco ones and make mountings up but would prefer to buy and fit soem already made up so that should they get damaged spares are available + cant really be bothered with all the welding and fabrication if something as good or better is freely available. So any ideas???
  7. My B40 and assorted Spanish stuff uses a WM2 rim which seems to be ok. My local tyre supplier "Motorcycle tyre sales" used to be "John Cooper tyres" remember him? Old moon eyes? Oh all right i'm too old and you aren't. Seemed surprised it was so narrow expecting a wider rim but i seem to remember all trials bikes had relatively narrow rims. Especially compared to today. My R1 rear is as wide as my car. I assume the idea is that trials by its very nature requires that the rear tyre can conform to the terrain and by keeping the rim relatively narrow it makes the tyres footprint more rounded in cross section thereby giving better grip on cambers etc. The wider the rim for a given tread width the the more "flat" the footprint of the tread would be. All things being equal. then the tread would also effectively close up reducing grip. Then again i could be totally wrong and it could be just that there wasnt anything wider available back then? I'm sure the wise ones will put you and me right but "thats my theory which belongs to me" Monty Python. Never mind get back in my tardis. Oh yes also the big problem with cubs, apart from the big ends and overheating which is another story, is clearence between the back tyre and the chain. The wider the rim the less the clearence also thereby putting the brakes on in mud etc.
  8. Thanks T F T but the 349 has a flange and two 6mm bolts holding it to the tank. Have made a note of the address though. You never know they may be useful for other bits.
  9. Err why change back to a Monoblock? I've just done the opposite and fitted a brand new Mk 1 concentric. Trouble is i've sold the monoblock now. Is there a problem running the B40 on a concentric?? apart from the obvious pre 65 rules and regulations?
  10. Update on the fuel tap situation. Contacted Steve Goode, nice bloke very helpful, who supplied a fuel tap. Said it was for a Gas Gas but bolt holes were 35mm centres and should fit. Well it does, sort of. If any body else needs one all you have to do is make an alloy adaptor plate up as the tap supplied is too narrow to seal properly to the Cota tank as the hole in the tank is about 13mm and the tap flange is only 19mm wide at the widest point so the o ring seal doesnt. If you know what i mean. Just add two slightly longer 6mm s/s allen bolts and et voila a working fuel tap for under a tenner and the old war horse is up and running again and you can hardly tell its non standard. Look the bike is for riding not a concours competition. I am sure the same mod will work for the Bultaco when it needs one so give Steve a ring if you need a new fuel tap. Thanks for the suggestion Woody nice one.
  11. Hi dont know if this will be of ANY help but you could try Ellastone off road 01889 590186 or i did notice that a guy on e bay was selling off a load of Cota 348 bits. Now there is an airbox on there currently about a tenner and i know its off a 348 but its the same as the one on my 349 and according to Jeff Bungay the 330 is basically the same engine as a late 349 but with a different barrel etc and a lot of the parts will fit. Anyway if not and you can get the airbox cheap enough you should be able to modify it to fit easier than making one from scratch. The tank seems almost the same as my 349's polyprop one also so you never know. Worth a look anyway.
  12. thanks Vinnie. Yes the Rex Caunt system was the one i had been looking at. How do you find it? Is it easy to fit and set up? Has it been reliable? Do you think its worth the money? Does your cub, and hopefully my B40, run better with it fitted? I dont think i will be venturing up the Scotland and as i have Bultaco forks fitted at the moment, and will be transfering them to the Otter frame when it arrives, the purists definately wont like it. The thing is i remember riding in the late 60's and 70's and 80's come to that and loads of Cubs C15s and B40's and Triumph twins were modified to hell with whatever the rider could lay their hands on. My own centre East Midlands leaves it up to the Club organising the trial to classify the bike and it looks like i will have to ride in the "specials" class anyway so i thought what the hell lets just make the bike as pleasureable as possible to ride. At least my bike will be honest. No hiden Yamaha internals in BSA outers, Mikuni carb, 5 speed boxes, lightweight cranks and titanium this and that. Just an honest late 60's early 70's old BSA. OK with electronic ignition which if it was available then would have been fitted to everything. Just wondering what the experience of the membership was before shelling out my hard earned. Thanks again for the input.
  13. Sorry mate if the sprocket is welded to the hub you were right it is a bodge and a pretty naff one at that. I've never come across a hub with a non replaceable sprocket. Seeing as even on road a sprocket would only last about 5-10,000 mls even on an old B40 then you would have to replace the hub and rebuild the entire back wheel ERRR No. Best bet is to get the wheel rebuilt using a bantam hub as they are slightly wider than the tiger cub and both are consciderably lighter than the standard B40 unit. For suggestions look in Don Morley's book "Classic British Trials Bikes". I know its a bit old now but its still the bible for pre 65 4 strokes. Alternatively http://trialsbsa.homestead.com/Home.html is a good site with plenty of info on pre 65 trials and B40 bikes with some good photos. Hope this is of some help.
  14. Hi I am, amongst other things, in the process of rebuilding / modifying a BSA B40 ex WD for trials. I've ordered an Otter frame and when that arrives i will start putting things together. My engine is a 67 with points on the side cover but i was thinking of scrapping the current ignition, zener diode rectifier capacitor etc, and substituting a modern electronic set up. I've been looking at the one made by Rex Caunt do any of you have any experience of this ?? or is there a better alternative?? Finally ANY suggestions of useful mods that you guys have found worth incorporateing into the bike would be most appreciated.
  15. Hope this helps. I work for a firm called Arco, they have branches all over the country, and the material looks just like our Arco strip. Clear pvc used for making those strip curtain doors you see on wharehouses. Comes as 200mm x 2mm, 300mm x 3mm and 400mm x 4mm std and a soft one called Arctic grade for use on cold stores. Probably cost you about
  16. Thanks mate will give him a bell tomorrow. Can i just say it's really nice to see so much helpful information being passed around. I just hope i can be of help to some of you guys someday. Thanks again. All contributions gratefully accepted.
  17. Wonder if any of you have any helpful suggestions? The rebuild on the old 349 Cota is progressing slowly, too slowly to br honest as i would never have guessed parts would be so hard to come by when i started. Still we live and learn. Time came on Sunday to see if the rebuilt engine would start. You know the routine. Fit tank, fit all new pipes, fill with fuel, get ready to kick the thing into life (hopefully),turn petrol on, press choke. Notice strong smell of fuel, get wet foot, panic!!!!! Take off tank, drain tank, curse profusely all because the b****y petrol taps k*******d and p*****g fuel every where. So does anybody have or know the whareabouts of a new fuel tap to fit a 349 Cota late model. Two bolts holding it to the polyprop tank ? Checked the 340 bultaco and the tap on that looks identical. Tried Bultaco UK, no stock waiting for a delivery from Spain. Tried Mainly Spanish, no stock waiting for a delivery from Spain. Tried Millers, no stock yeah youve guessed it. Oh yes tried Sandifords, Sorry Honda have deleted cant help. So any ideas? apart from making a plate up and tapping it 1/4 BSP and screwing a british pattern tap into it. I would like to keep origional if possible.
  18. Hi guys Just been on e bay and theres a Gollner KT250 up for grabs looks really nice but bet it fetches a high price? Over
  19. Thanks for the response. I've already tried Jeff and Dave. They are both good guys but neither could help. I'm a glutton for punishment at the moment as i am also rebuilding a 340 bultaco 6 speed (almost finished) and a 349 Cota (about 75% just cycle parts to go) and Jeff has been an Aladdins cave of parts. Ossa parts however? Unfortunately not. I've heard of that mystical garage too but when i was last in Barcelona nobody there had. Then to top all that i've bought a B40, told you i was a glutton for punshment, so you will probably see quite a few postings for help and advice. Woody yes i agree i have already moved the footrests. Its good to know i was right and it looks like i will have to fabricate an airbox also. If somebody had the money, time and skill there must be a living to be made out there with Ossa bits as there's loads of bikes needing loads of bits. Problem is when i get it finished i probably wont dare ride it as i'd be unable to repair it if anything broke. One reason i bought the B40. Daft as it sounds there is a ready supply of parts for these. Only problem is how origional do you keep the bikes ? Nobody seems to be anle to tell me what is legal and what isnt. thanks again for the advice.
  20. Hi New to this. I am rebuilding a Ossa 350 yellow gripper and surprise surprise it hasnt got an airbox. Does anybody out there know of the whareabouts of one?
