remove swingarm bearings

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have to change those 4 (HK2218RS)swingarm bearings. I've removed the swingarm from the bike but it looks difficult to remove the bearings.

Do you know any good/easy technique?

Regards.

I used a socket that was slightly smaller than the diameter of the bearings and hit that with a hammer. I think i gave them a good soaking with WD40 first though. I don't remember them being too tight though, mainly held in by rust and crud.

Good luck Mike

Thanks Mike.

I did as you said. First, a good cleaning and soaking - very important. I guess those bearing are the original ones (from 2005) according to their very bad condition.

Then, I used a 19 mm socket and a BIG hammer. I had to hit harder just first 3 times in order to unlock the bearings. After that it was easier. I removed both bearings on the same side.

looks like a 20 or 21 mm socket fits better.

Regards.

It's easier to use a vice !!

How about a picture of the settup ? Just use a vice is not very descriptive for some folks LOL

And heat! Warm the swingarm holes and cool by drenching in cold water a few times. This’ll help loosen any corrosion. Then re heat and slowly and squarely squeeze out with a vice (pushing a bearing sized socket through the swim arm and the old bearing into a larger socket on the opposite side). Reverse procedure to re fit but put new bearings in the freezer the night before and warm swingarm before fitting. They should just about drop in them with any bashing required.

This video will show you the rough idea.
