if you want a custom jobbie then go for it i say. but i was thinking along the lines you are before i bought my stand.

for magnetic trays i use a selection of these :

small and large. you can use them for bolts/clips/washers/pins etc and keep it all seperate (handy when re-assembleing)

or even parts like calipers, bearings etc. brake fluid proof. petrol proof.

higher the better id say.

they are easy to lift on if you pick it up by the back wheel.

i was going to use the base of an old office chair for mine so its on castors to move it around on the floor and also able to rotate it 360* when working on it.

they are also go up and down hydraulically so you can alter height.
