Cutting Out When It Gets Hot!

My 280i SSDT model has a problem with the electrical system somewhere. It cuts out in stages when it is hot.... First the top and mid end goes and then after limping around on low revs for about 2 minutes the engine cuts completely. It is impossible to start until it has cooled for maybe 5 minutes and then it starts as normal on the first or second kick. Subsequent to that it runs normally on either map until it has heated up.....the same sequence after a shorter time. I feel it is in the left hand engine case as it started after a shorter interval after I poured half a bottle of water over it.

The problem happens after exactly the same interval after starting riding and I have tried a new plug to no avail (even though the old plug was a perfect milk chocolate colour).

Please offer any suggestions as the opinions I have canvassed so far all suggest a coil or stator about to fail.....

Hi there, I had a Beta Techno several years back that had identical symptoms as that and it turned out to be a faulty stator,it would run for a period of time and then give you the symptoms of a plug breaking down.

My Beta would always end up with water being held in the ignition cover as it was very pliable plastic ignition cover that seemed impossible to seal.

And on that note,my 2012 Ossa has also been taking in water to the ignition side,I removed the cover yesterday to find bad rust marks on the flywheel due to water laying in there for sometime,so all you guys need to check this now and again,I will be trying to see if I can improve the seal will a smear of silocone.

I have just ordered a flywheel puller to remove the flywheel on mine and give everything a good clean,by the way the flywheel puller is the same as a (Gas Gas Pro) M27mm x 1mm (right hand thread).

Hope this helps.

i noticed my ecu connectors where a bit ropey so i cleaned them

and the used a bit of silicone grease when i plugged it back in

to stop the water getting in. one of the 2013 mods is to mount

this ecu externally on the motor to allow better access for the air filter

to be changed, i hope they get it sealed up ok

Birkett Motosport were the UK importer. Nearly 2 hours north from Manchester, but may be worth the drive to get it sorted correctly.
