Ajs In Trials

Hi,

For a brief period in 1959 Peter Fletcher was loaned a works AJS, he didn’t like the bike and was happy to quickly revert to the Royal Enfield camp!

For the 1959 British Experts, the works bike is obviously a comp shop knock-up, with the old swinging fork and long Girlings fitted with the alloy clevis bottom mount! Gordon Jackson had his 1959 bike VYW 659 for that Experts, so this is probably his old bike, UXO 194 in its final, still short stroke, form.

Enjoy.

Hi,

Bob Gollner had several ex-works models, here Cecil Bailey spotted him on TUL 654, an ex-Bob Manns AMC registered as an AJS but fitted with the Matchless G3C motor from the outset! This machine was subsequently owned by yours truly, and is currently in use in the United States.

Enjoy.

Hi,

Issued in May 1963, the factory press release photograph of the 1964 model AJS ‘Experts’ trials model, the soon to be available production short stroke motor with the Norton oil pump type bottom end. Beautiful in the extreme, but to those more used to the unstoppable nature of the previous long stroke design – and it should be noted that grouping included most of the works riders – possibly fatally flawed.

It is not unusual for so-called AMC ‘experts’ to decry 1964 models as being inaccurate when fitted with a small seat pad rather than the traditional Dunlop rubber saddle, but this factory illustration proves them sadly wrong!

Enjoy.

Hi,

Not all of the Ajays that turned up at the Ilkley Reunion trial in 1992 were being ridden in the trial !!

Did you know that AJS (Albert J Stephens & Co) whilst they were still based in Wolverhampton and hadn't merged completely with Matchless at the Plumstead factory (at the time the largest motorcycle production facility in the world!) had manufactured a car?

This example was brought to the AJS/M Owners Club Jampot Rally in the early 1990s.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Hi,

In days of yore, I am led to believe, one might hear the cry, in battle, "Nay, Sam, come pick up thy musket........".

Later, in the 1990s, I know for a fact, one could hear the cry, in motorcycle battles, "Nay, Stan, come pick up thy Ajay......"

Enjoy.

Hi,

Sorting through the archives - I reckon this is Brian Newbury, from Chippenham way, riding his Pykett replica AJS in about the 1992 or '93 Greensmith Memorial trial, about to enter Hopton Brook.

Enjoy.
