Hi.

Got a beta evo which needs a minor job doing. Cant get the back brake to work propperly. All the trials repair places seem to be over Yorkshire way. Most motorcycle mechanics even people i know who are handy with MX bikes dont want to touch trials. If anyone knows anyone local to me who like to fix trials bike please can you post their details?

Thanks  alot.

Chris

Thanks for the reply Oni. I have got a bleeding kit, and watched many youtube vids and spent over 6 hours this weekend trying to sort it doing various different things some of which you have suggested. I did like the comment about swapping the reservoir for something larger as it has been p****** me off keep extracting and pushing fluid through it. Now that said, do you know any one / garage in and around the NW area who fixes trials bikes? Not only am I **** with brakes but bikes in general so it would be good to find someone i can take it to for this or any other potential issues.

Regards

Chris

Cheers Nebulous. The problem with someone 30 miles is that with work i can only drop it somewhere at the weekend and it would mean collecting the weekend after. The guy at FICS is probably more than capable of doing it but the guy tried to rip me off years ago.

I took an Aprilia RS125 up there for him 2 sell. Alot of the bikes he advertises he is selling on behalf of people. I was emigrating to NZ and he said he would buy it off me if he could not sell it before i was leaving ( the bike was immac with low miles and he could not sell it in 2 months). Agreed a price, then offered me less with some sob story, I agreed and he said it would be a couple of weeks until he had the money. Came to collect it and he offered me less again with some more sob storey. End of the day he knew i was leaving the country and needed to get shut of it so he was stalling me right up to the end so he could get the bike for nothing. I went ape**** at him and threatened to knock him out! He bought the bike in the end for the original price agreed.

Long storey their but anyhow. Itlf anyone else can reccomend someone or garage it would be much appreciated.

Regard

Chris

Hi Oni.

I agree with doing as much as you can yourself. I dont mind having a go at things but sometimes you come to stuff that you spend ages on and either get no further with or make things worse. I dont mind admitting defeat when ive had a good go at something and paying someone who knows more than me a fair price to sort things. Just struggling to find a good local trials mechanic.

Chris

People who ride road bikes are obviously easier to fleece or they are so wealthy they do not need to be stretchered out when they get the bill because they fell over as their pants were round their ankles......Excellent thanks.£50 for 1/2 hrs labour I was expecting it to be more........I once watched a geezer pay  over £11 for a paint  touch up stick for his car at a Ford main dealer and he just paid up without a murmur.......I was there to find out how much a set of replacement keys for a Transit were ......Around £130  and then some said the lunatic behind the counter.

Having run a number of franchised garages and main dealerships I can tell you that there’s an awful lot more to the hourly charge out rate. I could go on about overheads ( all worked into that rate) I could go on about the mandatory factory trading and specialised mandatory tools (you have to buy to remain in franchise) I could go on about the sundries needed to operate, oils, overalls coporate uniforms, overalls, health and safety essentials, ramps, which all need maintenance etc. The dead money areas like reception staff and cleaners etc etc. This is why it is wrong to compare high street with back street, I’m not about to criticise ‘the back street garage’ because many of them do a dammed good job especially when they nick a factory trained technician/mechanic. Oh and then there’s all the electronic kit needed to meet franchise agreement status...£££££! I think at today’s prices £50 for half an hour is probably about right. Just don’t go to London and expect to find bargain labour rates. I used to have to charge £60 before the 24/7 breakdown truck left the forecourt, well would you sit st home waiting for the phone to call you away from your comfy home out into the winters night!

If Wigan lad cares to post pictures of the rear brake assembly we should be able to help him solve his issues....Wigan lad are you up for a bit more work? Have you tried inserting between the pads and caliper pistons either hard plastic strips or lollipop sticks to force the caliper pistons right back into the caliper housing. This reduces lost movement and it’s something cycle mechanics do as well as experienced car mechanics working on more complex systems. This method is not always needed but I had to do this on my mates Aprilia Futura to achieve a really good pedal. When you bleed the system drawing the fluid out by suction (depression) is sometimes the best method, however if the rear master cylinder is leaking, these can leak air in as well as fluid out, then you need a new assembly or a kit if the bores not worn. The same goes for the caliper. On some bikes it’s possible to remove the entire rear brake system off the bike in one bit and then you can work on it on the bench, or take it to a cycle shop or garage or bike dealer and ask the question. ???‍??‍? If you were nearer and the bike could be brought to my place I’d give it a go while you watched/helped but Wigan is a fair old way to Robin Hood Country.

Sorry sections swept. I just seen your post. Thanks for the offer regarding the pictures and advice etc much appreciated. I have found someone local willing to look at it for me. I can drop with him on my way to work as he is local to the office.

As I said i am not against having a go at things but i do not mind paying a mechanic or anyone who can sort something i cannot. He might charge me £50 for bleeding the brake but when you earn £300 a day, and you spend 6 hours looking at something that you cannot get right, plus £25 quid in halfords for oil and  gear, £50 is cheap compared to £250 in theory it has already cost  me ?

Yes @section swept I know that there are a lot of overheads and that's where the seemingly high labour rates come from ....I was being flippant.....but I have worked in the industry and seen the action and now I prefer to keep everything in house.i  also have mates who are plumbers and electricians.....love to hear their success stories.

Nice work on trying to help out Wigan lad @section swept but it sounds like 6 hours of brake bleeding nearly ended with a call to the Samaritans .......these youngsters.... I don't know; in my day you would have just kept going even if it took 30 days and 24 hrs a day just to get a pedal.....people these days have far more sense.

aye....and we used to live in a shoebox int middle o't' road..!

They appear to have far more money????? too! I like to do most of my home repairs myself⚒?⛏ and especially hate having to pay for work on my cars just to keep the warranty. Anyhow I’m going with the majority now and just pay up and enjoy life??
