Helmet fit?

With a full face as you are probably aware, these are designed to be more of a snug fit and worn just so. Too many bikers have the helmet tipped forward bringing the face opening too far down onto their forehead, this exposes too much of the lower base of the skull at the rear. Some helmets are a perfect fit on some types of skull shape, others are not. l cannot wear some types of full face as they just do not feel right, Arai, Shoei and HJC are helmet shapes that fit my head shape very well. Bearing in mind that Arai make more than one size of helmet in small, medium and large; that is there are a range of large ie large 1 large 2 etc and the same for the other sizes. You will find this out when you either go to a specialist or visit a service centre at a show or race.

You would be well advised to try as many helmet manufacturers as possible, bearing in mind it is just as important to obtain the best fitting snd most comfortable helmet....forget fancy names and flashy stickers...riding all day getting hot and trying to concentrate when your helmet is driving you insane with pressure where you dont want it will not help or improve your riding. Your open face helmet should be a snug and well fitting type with at least two finger widths of forehead showing, but this depe ds upon your particular skull shape. You are more likely to bang your head against the ground, tree, rock or the bike than a road rider so make sure its a helmet you feel secure in. When the helmet is snug on your head and the strap secured you should not be able to move your head inside the helmet very much at all! Same applies to full face types. Having sold all types of helmets it always alarmed me when people chose a too big a helmet because it was easier to put....I ask you? Off they’d go and as soon as they got any speed up the wind would get ubder the helmet and lift up and try to tear their head off.

So your trials helmet should fit as well as your road lid. If it feels odd in the fit it probably isnt right for you, or the size is wrong.

Hope this helps you make the best choice??

Hi Boner ,

I had the same problem with my airoh trials helmet I purchased in 2015 when I started in trials. it would not fit even close to correct, too tight front to back and too loose side to side.i tried to custom fit it with a spoon and hammer on the eps foam with no joy. I wear my motocross helmet now .  I have always had to wear aria helmets in motocross and road course to fit my long oval head shape, I wonder if there is any trials helmet that will fit me correct .

p.s. check your headlight thread someone posted the correct part number to achieve your install on that.

Thanks for the in depth reply.

Agreed about road lids, and I’ve always spent a great deal of time trying to find the best lid.

I’ve picked up a Jitsie HT2, it fits very well, but I’m surprised it sits so high on the forehead.

I’ll measure it again in the morning.

Thanks.

How should a trials helmet fit on your forehead?

I’ve only been used to road full face lids, and my new Jitsie feels like it’s sitting rather high up on my forehead!

Is this a thing?

Cheers Boner.

I’ve not really noticed (I wear an Airoh) but perhaps it’s because in certain sections you will need to roll your eyes up so you don’t want to be looking at the edge of your helmet.

Although being able to see the edge of ones helmet if one were to roll their eyes up may be a distraction in certain sections I for one would be very happy to put up with  that.

I wear an ht2 and think it fits like any other trials helmet I've worn in the past, so i think its more your unusualness to trials helmets as opposed to anything different to the ht2.

I’m going to stick with the HT2. I’m sure it’s just that new helmet feeling, and I’m sure I’ll get used to it after a while.

Boner.

Just make sure it isn't too small and not fulling seating on your head i.e. there's a gap between the crown of your head and the helmet

If your still aware of the helmet after a few rides, its probably not a good fit.

I hear u s.s.  but I figured I would try a bit of a custom fit before I gave up on it completely. Finally I ended up throwing it away anyhow. I wish I could get a quality trials helmet but in the states theres no way to try anything trials oriented for fit so I gave up and just use my aria motocross helmet. Not sure how anybody likes the quality of the airoh helmet I had , to me it seemed like some kind of Chinese junk that was made for max profit, not max safety, hardly above a kids toy for riding bicycles.  After using handmade aria helmets for over 30 years now it will be hard to compare any helmet to what im used to. On the other hand my wife likes her airoh just fine , she has no problem with the fit and feel of it.

Maxwell Smart,I recently made the trip from south shore of Montreal to Jack's Cycles in South Berwick Maine for the very reason you mentioned. Stuart keep a stock off helmet so I was able to find the one that fit me.

I have a very oval head as well and find the Airoh TRR but it isn't a great fit even a size up.  Not fond of the Airoh Evergreen (don't think they make it anymore...), lower end quality over the TRR if you ask me.

I can't say it will fit you better enough over the Airoh to get one, however I found that the Hebo Zone 4 has a bit more oval in its shape in my opinion over the Airoh TRR and has about the same air flow and weight.

Good luck.

The jitsie HT2 XXL was a good fit size wise, but there were a couple of small pressure pinch points, which I knew were going to give me grief after wearing the helmet for some time.

So I’ve done a terrible thing and shaved a bit of the foam back to relieve the pressure point. I understand that this isn’t great practice, but the helmet know fits comfortably, and to be honest at my level of riding, shouldn’t significantly impact the integrity of the helmet.
