clutch disengagement

Hi folks,

Trying to fix an old JT 250. Any idea why the clutch wont seem to disengage, even with a new set of clutch plates? Clutch pressure plate seems to be lifting when the clutch is pulled. How much in mm should it be lifting? Is it possible that cold sticking plates could be locking together? Or is there anything else that could be broken and causing the lock?

They only throw a couple of mm or so. Check steel plates for warping.  Also check parts diagrams for washer between basket and hub for example.

The pressure plate only goes together one way. There is a notch on one of the fingers and a corresponding notch.  Been a long time for me to give a better description.

Water from the water pump, in the oil, will cause the plates to stick and it doesn't have to be much.

Are you talking about sticking when cold after the bike has sat for a while?  That is common in many trials bikes.  I have learned to live with it on some bikes.  Start bike, pull in clutch and give bike a little roll forward while putting in gear.  Ride bike forward with clutch in and blip throttle.  It will break loose in 10 feet or so and not stick again until next cold start after sitting....if it is just a cold start issue.
