Anyone who partakes of the popular Trials Central forums will know that for some time now we have had Deryk Wylde sharing images from his vast collection. For those unfamiliar with Deryk, he is past editor of what was, back in the day, a very popular magazine by the name of "Off Road Review". We've been working with Deryk for a number of months now to bring back Off Road Review in a format appropriate for the digital age and today we are proud to launch the very first edition.
In Deryk's words:
"Many will have seen mention on Trials Central of Off Road Review - the magazine published from December 1991 until 2002, which is now treated as a reference work in various museums and libraries around the world. At the same time I also published a series of books dedicated to various aspects of the history of the sport, Lochaber Rich Mixture (the story of the SSDT), Midlands Rich Mixture (motorcycle sport in the Midlands), the Scott Trial, the Rickman Story (the story of Metisse motorcycles), etc.
ORR and all the Rich Mixture series of books were profusely illustrated, mainly with photographs never seen before.
Sadly in 2001 my wife, herself an internationally acclaimed photographer, and a vital part in our publishing partnership, lost her fight with cancer - and the hard copy publishing days came to an end.
However, I continued photographing events and kept in touch with all my old colleagues, so that now there is the possibility of publishing electronically on the internet without all the incurred costs and hassle of printing paper copies and distributing them to potential readers. I am able to take all the information contained in ORR and all the Rich Mixture titles and review them, introduce even more historical photographs we could not afford to include originally plus bring the stories of events like the SSDT and the Scott right up to date with hundreds of photographs never seen before.
As always we shall concentrate in including as many of the 'also rans' as possible, utilising all of my archives to the full. We long since realised there could not be winners if their were not the other competitors - and most other publications will dish up a constant surfeit of images of the successful few...
We are calling the refreshed and revised eMag 'OFFROAD REVUe' or, more likely it will be known as 'ORRe' (e for electronic - clever, huh?!) - and are proud to publish the first issue. The plan is to publish monthly or more frequently if there is demand - but most importantly it will follow the original ORR format that relied on a great deal of interaction with the readers. If you spot an error let us know and we will print a correction up front and large, that way you can rely on the information included.
In the 40 pages of this opening issue you will find features on Mr. Telford - Alan Wright, Personalities of the SSDT takes a look back at Bob Paterson, we start a series of articles on the famous Scott Trial in the run-up to this year's centenary Trial, Don Morley's Talmag Trial reflections, our first excerpt from the noted Lochaber Rich Mixture book, which will be serialised though future issues, a look back at the 2013 Reeth Three Day Trial and much more!
