Tight clutch plates

I am trying to replace my clutch plates and after fitting, new clutch plates the clutch drags. The new clutch plates are very tight! do I need to file them down on the 3 corners ? of the sqaure lugs or just the sides. When I fitted them with the clutch hot they slid in OK. But when cold were tight. Will I damage the plates by filing them?. Are there any clutch advice sites anywere, have looked on Google no luck.
