I have just purchased a TY 250 mono, white frame silver wheels.Engine number 53Y but no numbers(common on Jap mkt bikes) Frame no begins 3BB 000*** It has a Mitani flywheel cover, Eikoh silencer tail pipe and a guard on the black silencer box next to your left leg. Also a well made fibreglass tank cover that bolts over original tank. The r mudguard is solid, no holes for a r light etc, sadly it is split.I am wondering if it is a Grey import, I bought it from Staffordshire. Any info appreciated, thanks in advance

Sounds like an TY250S to me, does it have a steering lock?

These were on the S frames, which were the Japanese bikes, I had one, my brother has it now.

They are very similar bikes, but at the same time, there are a lot of differences, the biggest are that the frame is different, and the S model has a bracket from the head to the frame to stregthen it, the R doesn't.

The forks are also different I think, much softer on the S models, they sag quite a lot.

I hope that from this you can tell which model your bike is.

Didn't the S have a metal tank?. This one has a plastic tank same as the R. No steering lock. There is a cyl head bracket that bolts to the frame at the back of the head same as a pinky has. Also the fork bottoms look as though they have never been painted they are laquered alloy. Forks did not seem different to a pinky I once owned, not too soft.

Mikuni carb with choke on opposite side, Eikoh sticker on shock reservoir red spring non adjustable res ?? On close inspection there has been white paint on the fork lowers. Cant see coil at present. The r chain guide is alloy as normally nylon/ plastic and the crankcase protector in front of the f sprocket is thicker alloy and silver ??

I believe that it is a TY250R but may have competed in SSDT. Here is my evidence:

Having a TY250 I get allot of interest from people coming up and sharing little bits and pieces. Apparently they would use a steel petrol tank on the SSDT as it was bigger.

Possible a very good rider who did the changes or possible something to do with Birkett? I would be tempted to say it may be something to do with the Hudson family but I recently found out they still have all their TY. Now they are some special beasts.

Thanks for the replies. Spoke to Mitsui Yamaha today, they confirmed it is a 1988 TY250 r and a Japanese home market bike. (Grey import. )
