hi,

lost my ty175 in a river today, turns over easy enough, took it back to the van took it home, iv taken the engine out and was talking to a freind and he said iv probably bent the conrod, whats the likely hood??

what else will be damaged?

Was the engine shut off before you dipped your headlights ?

Did you immediately turn bike upside down and drain the water out of the plug hole?

Did you run it again straightaway until it got hot / operating temperature ?(or rust will develope on all the steel surfaces)

And last but not least , if you ran it again ,was it ticking or more rattley than before ?

Did the same with a Beta Techno a few years back, got it out of the water it ran for a second or two and stopped. Turned out just to be water in the electrics including the kill switch, dried it out and ran fine

why would you want to take the engine out ?

The normal course of action would be as Sirsherco suggested.

1.over on the bars pump out water through plughole using kickstart.

2. try and start

3. will usually run and die as water flicks of sidewalls into plug gap

4.blow out,keep trying until it runs and dries out.

However, now that you have left it and taken engine out...

Tip out water if any left.

Blow out carb jets and reed block.

Remove flywheel and clean inside and coil faces and points.

May as well check piston, rings and bore at this stage

Rebuild and go!

Most unlikely to damage rod or anything else

If it sucked in mud you may score the piston and barrel.

Been there many times in Scotland!

tryed startin but no luck what so ever, tipped up so no water in, about a pint of water came out the exhaust when i took it off, cleaned up the carb good and proper today, it was full of muddy water, i took head off and it was really badly coked up anyway but it had scored the cylinder, so im getting it bored out and oversize piston, gonna do the bearings while im at it, gonna put a boost bottle on it whilst im at it, rd350lc inlet, im using this as an excuse to smarten it up so in spring it will look mint!! considering putting it on the road, anyone kno what il need to do??

You will need to have the bike dated and a letter produced to prove the year of manufacture, speak to Yamaha with your frame number on 01932 358000.

You can then get the bike MOT'd using the frame number.

Insure it, again on the frame number.

Take all your documentation to your local DVLA and they will provide you with a registration based on the year of manufacture. Produce a new MOT with the registration on it and finally issue you with a current tax disc.

You then ring up your insurance company and give them the new registration and off you go.

It's as easy as that. I done it recently with my TY250 T/S.
