January 25, 200818 yr My mate has just found quite a bit of metal fillings in his gear oil, on his 02 290. Is this normal ? My GasGas was as clean as a whistle any info much appreciated
January 25, 200818 yr You can expect a few on a new bike, on a 02 if the oil has been change often there shouldn't be much. change the oil and if it's running all right, ride a bit and check again.
January 25, 200818 yr As Ishy say's ... expect a bit on the mag of the drain bolt on an 02 bike... this is normal. but as long as the filings are very fine (lot less than sand) . If the filings are sand size or bigger, its a time bomb.. but my advise would be if it sounds ok and no nasty bottom end knocks, ride and enjoy, change the oil every 5 or 6 times out.
January 25, 200818 yr As the guys above have stated.. Apart from the swarf from a brand new bike ,metal filings are a bad sign.. Are you sure these filings are metallic? Some fibres from the clutch plates are acceptable.
January 25, 200818 yr Just take future care of the gear box and gear changes. Nice and gently with the clutch fully engaged. I no it sounds stupid but it could be half a milli seconds difference in the gear change meaning it slipping in to gear or being forced in
January 25, 200818 yr My 03 and 05 had magnets glued into the aluminium drain plug. Filler plug looked to be the same part without the magnet glued in If the drain plug has lost its magnet, thats a big bit of metallic material loose in the gearbox... Best bet is regular oil changes and keep an eye on it. Filings are to be expected, lumps / teeth / needle rollers are not.
