Hi folks, presently using an old cub, but would like to build up a lightweight James. I know there are frames, hubs, forks etc being made or available out there, but don't know where to start looking. Can any of you point me in the right direction for the components?? Hi Vinnied, and thanks a lot for that. I am aware that Alan Whitton maked 'billet hubs', but does he also do the other stuff like frames, tanks, and such like??

As far as i no he does the lot, if he does not have it, im sure he could point you in the right direction

Thanks Vinnie, much appreciated. Noticed your thread on cleaning up your Cub head. I've not so far found a magic solution for the problem and have just to use plain old elbow grease. Best of luck, and if you've ever used Castro R or something like it you will need it. Cheers.

There's a James just appeared in the classifieds - might save you a lot of trouble as you won't build one with all the trick bits for the asking price

i doubt you can buy a competative ready to trial all new engine and box from a specialist off the shelf for less than 1500, forks ready to fit will be a grand, figure for the frame 1500 your grand for hubs etc might only buy half of whats on the list and 200 for a tank even sammy's mass produced tanks are 250 so a one off might be 350.

i suspect that from nowt a truely competative bike can be bought for 6 - 7 k.

look at dave varleys excellent triumph twins which he 'knocks out' at 7k.....

Hi Woody n Totalshell thanks for the input. I hadn't expected the trick bits to be cheap but I'm not for throwing money at this project except where necessary and would wish to source many of the bits from other bikes. I had it in mind for example to use cub hubs rather than billet hubs. Engine would have to be new of course, but the idea is to keep the costs within reason.

In what classifieds have you seen a James ad woody, I don't see anything in the home page ads??

Hi Kinell thanks for that! Eyes aren't good, ears arn't good, back sticks to the mattress in the morning, and I'm losing my mind. Ah well another slug out of the bottle. You can't beat the 'iron brew'!!!

Paul Jackson also makes a very good James/FB frame, have a look on the Yorks Classic website and you will see many of these bikes there.

Further to this thread, which I started some months ago, I am now in the middle of a James build. Woody was a wee bit off with his estimates on prices. An iron barrel engine will be 1200 to 1400 and if you want square barrel you can add another 350 to that. Even if you don't use billet hubs and brake plates, by the time you've widened the rear hub used new rims and stainless spokes, then the powder coating, building and new tyres and bearigs etc the cost of the set of wheels will be getting up to the 1000 that Woody estimated. A bike is not cheap to build but it is a very satisfying excercise and solving the little engineering problems is quite interesting too. Have to say that I've been getting much help from the two Alan's, John Bull, and Dave Stewart, so many thanks to them. Will post some pics when it's finished, which will not be 'till well after the Manx event. And good luck to all who have entered, enjoy!!
