May 21, 200917 yr Howdy folks, The other week (SSDT week) i went out for a buzz on the '99 sherco...... She's not been used for a while and i had the usual clutch problem of it not engaging... After 5 mins of riding around the clutch started working so off we went..... Until we were going up a forestry road and i noticed a loud clatter of the engine in fourth gear.... I eased the clutch in and give her a rev and the same clatter was present.... Shortly after this the clutch gave up because the engine overheated and burnt out the clutch cable..... Downer. The bike then revved itself up before i eventually cut it. I took the top end of the engine to check the piston and barrel... All is ok and no play in the bearings. I then had to leave my bike in my mates capable hands for the rebuild. She is now back together and starts fine but stills has the clatter.... I was thinking logically after this and thought, engine overheating and clatter could be a u/s water pump..... Anybody had a similar experiance or can anyone offer advice on avenues to go down.... All advice is welcome but i will have to pass it on to my mate as my bike is in Fort william and i am not.... Cheers Iain

May 21, 200917 yr Author The clutch cable thing is nothing important, it just happened to be against the engine casing when it overheated...... The main issue is this bloody rattle from the engine... To me it sounds expensive.... I shall await the replies and then guage the cost of repair..... Cheers Iain
May 22, 200917 yr Now, this does actually sound like a leaky crank seal issue with the bike pinging and revving itself up. That is how these things happen! Yet start with a clean carby and fuel, be sure the fan is cycling properly and there is no loss of coolant and the pump is turning.. If the piston and the rest is ok, then the seals have probably taken a set from non use and expired! I have no idea bout the cable thing. Edited May 22, 200917 yr by copemech
May 22, 200917 yr Have you measured the barrel, I managed to distort the barrel on my 01 not long after I got it by sucking a little water when hot. All appeared fine & new piston had no effect on the noise. Crankseals going hard is always a possibilty as cope says although I've started bikes that have sat for 10+ years with no problems
